How to Write a Lab Report:

Purpose statement/Question:
What is the purpose of this lab? Or what question do you have pertaining to the lab.
Example: The purpose of this lab is to identify a reaction between yeast and hydrogen
peroxide.
Example: What type of chemical reaction will take place if dish soap is added to a
mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide?

Background Information:
Do some background research on how each of the following items will react with each
other. Identify the purpose of yeast in the experiment. (Everything is in the lab manual!)

Hypothesis:
Based on your research, what do you think will happen when you add yeast to a mixture
of hydrogen peroxide. (If, then, and because statement).

Materials:
List all the materials used for this experiment (refer to the lab manual).

Procedure:
List the steps for this experiment in order (refer to the lab manual).

Observations:
Make observations about each of the ingredients used in the experiment. Observe what
took place in the reaction.

Data Analysis:
Answer the following questions:

Why is yeast added to the reagents?

Where does all the oxygen come from?
What do you think happens if you add a less concentrated solution of hydrogen
peroxide? More concentrated?
Is this an endothermic or exothermic reaction?

Conclusion:
Was your hypothesis correct? If not, fix your hypothesis. What did you learn from the
experiment? (1 paragraph)
