Pre-Test and Post-Test

Here are the basic criteria I would rate my students with. Since it’s a beginning guitar 
unit, I don’t expect them to have perfect scores across the board.  
 
Criteria - 3 each 
● Physical - “I can” 
○ Instrument Position/Posture 
○ Strumming or Picking Technique 
○ Chord Finger Shape 
● Mental - “I know” 
○ String Names 
○ Chord Position 
○ Note/Fret Position 
 
Instrument Position/Posture 
● 2 - Student holds instrument correctly relative to their body and sits with good 
posture. 
● 1 - Student attempts correct positioning and posture but has problems with 
execution. 
● 0 - Student makes no attempt to hold instrument or sit correctly. 
 
Strumming and/or Picking Technique 
● 2 - Student can strum chords and/or pick notes to produce sound. 
● 1 - Student can produce sound but does not use correct technique. 
● 0 - Student makes no attempt to pick or strum correctly.  
 
****Chord Finger Shape 
● 2 - Student can form the correct chord shape using the appropriate fingers. 
● 1 - Student attempts to form the correct shape but has problems with 
execution. 
● 0 - Student makes no attempt to form chords.  
● **** Chords will not be covered until lesson 3 of 5; all students will receive an 
initial 0 here. 
 
String Names 
● 2 - Student can identify 4-6 strings. 
● 1 - Student can identify 1-3 strings. 
● 0 - Student cannot identify any strings. 
 
Chord Position 
● 2 - Student can identify where a chord should be played. 
● 1 - Student can identify  
● 0 - Student cannot identify the position of any learned chords.  
 
Note/Fret Position 
● 2 - Student can identify which fret corresponds with which note that we have 
learned. 
● 1 - Student uses the correct string but incorrect fret (or vice versa). 
● 0 - Student cannot identify note names with fret positions.
