1.0 ‘SCOPE OF WORK
1.1) This document describes the procedure for Local Post Weld Heat Treatment
of Piping Welded joints.
1.2) All items describe in this procedure shall be strictly observed in order to
attain a good quality of P.W.HI.
1.3) This procedure describe the minimum requirement of P.W.HI. on pipe joint
in accordance with the respective code and standard
2.0 APPLICATION CODE AND SPECIFICATION
2.1) ASME / ANSI 831.3 Chemical Plant & Petroleum Refinery Piping
3.0 METHOD OF PWHT
3.1) The operation of P.W.HJ. shall be performed in accordance to the
requirement given in the application code and specification section.
3.2) The P.W.HI. shall be conducted in locally by means of electrical resistance
heater.
4.0 LOCAL PWHT (BY RESISTANCE METHOD)
4.1) Weld joint shall be locally heat-treated in such manner that, the entire
band be brought up uniformly to the Required temperature, and held for
the specified period of the time by electrical resistance method
4.2] Minimum Requirement Heated Band Width :
4.2.1) In Local P.W.HT. of Butt Weld Joint, the minimum width of the
heated band, centered on the weld, shall extend 2.5 X Square
Root of RT beyond the edge of the weld,
4.2.2) In Local P.W.H.I. of Weld Branch Connection, the minimum width
of the heated band shall extend at least 2.5X Square Root of
RT beyond the edge of the weld joining the branch or
attachment fo the run pipe.
4.23) in Local P.WHI. of the Bent or Formed Sections, the minimum.
width of the heated band shall extend to 2.5 X Square Root of RT
on each side of the bent or formed area

FIG, 4-3,
MINIMUM INSULATION WIDTH
43.2) Ceramic fiber insulation blanket shall be provided for the area to
be treated.
433) The insulation blanket will be kept in place with iron wire or steel
wire.
43.4) Where possible , the ends of piping should be sealed to prevent
intemal air currents from creating excessively high thermal
gradients through the thickness of the piping .
43.5) After heat treatment all materials shall be cooled in sill air ,
protected from rain and draughts5.0

Thermocouple Location
44.1} Thermocouple shall be fimly attached to the center of the weld
zone using a capacitance ~ discharge type of thermocouple
welder. A demonstration will be carried out upon CLENT's request
When tack welding thermocouple on to the work piece ,
precautions shall be taken so as not to create defects such as
undercuts, efc,and the welded zone shall be smoothly finished by
grinder after heat treatment.
The minimum number of thermocouples to be attached to a work
piece shall be as follows :
Pipe Dia
ies) No. of T/C. Location
2" & below T Top of Piping
3" to 12" 2 Top & Boltom
‘Above 12” 3 Top Middle & Bolfom
TEMPERATURE MONITORING
5.1)
Temperature monitoring shall be done by thermocouples and temperatures
shall be continuously recorded on the temperature record chart.

6.4)
6.5)
Heating from ambient temperature to 300 Deg. C is unrestricted.
The rate of the heating at the temperature above 300 Deg. C shall not
exceed 220 Deg. C / Hr. for pipe wall thickness up to and including
25mm/T maximum. For maximum pipe wall thickness more one 25mm/T,
the heating rate shall be 55881 (Where T = pipe wall thickness in mm ).
Minimum required Soak Temperature & Time are at stated in attachment
‘appendix | Require for Heat Treatment.
The rate of Cooling from the Soak temperature to a temperature above
300 Deg. C. shall not exceed 245 Deg. C/ Hr. For pipe wall thickness up to
and including 25mm/T in maximum. For maximum pipe wall thickness over
than 25mm/T, the Cooling shall be 62501 (Where T = pipe wall thickness in
mm )
Cooling from 300 Deg. C in stil air is allowed,AA
