1. Colonial policy of the British government resulted in a Monopoly control of India's foreign
trade.
2. Exports and imports for largely restricted to be between India and Britain.
3. India's exports provided raw material to the British industry while India's imports
provided a huge market for the British industry.
4. Export surplus which was generated was only spent to meet administrative and war
expenses by the British government in India these expenses lead to the huge drain of
wealth as it was not used for the investment in Indian economy.
5. India's demographic profile showed high birth rate, high death rate,high infant mortality
rate, low expectancy of life and low rate of literacy these features pointed to economic
and social backwardness of the country.
