Research proposal
Working thesis: I believe that parent involvement in early childhood education should be
limited when it comes to kids managing their academic success because it will promote student
accountability, help kids learn how to advocate for themselves and teach children how to be
more independent.
Counter argument: Parents should be involved because they need to make sure their children
Section 1:
- I chose this topic because as I have progressed through the education system and have
seen first handed how kids have become more and more entitled due to parents doing
everything for them and taking care of their problems both academically and personally.
I believe that on the surface, this problem may seem irrelevant and unimportant,
however I believe this type of behavior can snowball into much bigger problems for kids
in the future. In my generation, many kids grow up thinking the world owes them
something, that all their issues will be taken care of when in reality kids should learn
how to be much more independent and emotionally in touch with themselves. While
parents always mean well, many parents have taken the driver’s seat it their children’s
academics which can create much bigger issues down the road.
Section 2:
- I feel very strong about this topic. I have had many friends in my life that failed to take
control of their lives because they expect others to do it for them. I think this is a very
strong topic because its specific and is recognized as one of the main problems of our
education system. I believe that this issue is important and relevant in today’s society. I
believe that parents should act as “rail guard for the bowling ball”, to guide their
children in the correct direction and be there for support but not do it for them. I
already know that this is a huge issue and is something that needs to be addressed. I
know that parents doing things for their children can cause much greater problems in
the future.
Section 3:
- I need to get more input from people in the education system. I also need more stats on
this issue. I still need to know what causes parents to do this as well.
Potential questions
1. What are the long term effects of parents taking control of their children’s
academic success?
2. How can we as a society help invest in our youth without “micromanaging” them
