THE FAMILY

Family is a group of persons united by the ties of marriage, blood or

adoption; consisting of a single household interacting in their social
roles and creating a common culture.-Burgess and Locke

It is both an association and institution. It is the primary cell out of

which the community develops

Nature of family :

 Universality-

 Emotional basis-close knit

 Limited size-

 Formative influence-Its influence in infancy determines the

personal structure of the individual.

 Nuclear position-society made up of family units

 Responsibility of the members-it is a great agency of the

socialization of the child

 Social regulation : family is the group in which the consenting

parties may feely enter but which they cannot easily leave or
dissolve

 Permanent and temporary-gradually the parents become

dependent on the children
