A Heat Exchanger is to be designed to recover heat from the gases coming out of the methanol

reactor. The heat recovered is to be used for heating feed gas mixture to the methanol reactor.

Flow rate of gases from methanol reactor = 4.2 kg/sec and entering the heat exchanger. The gases
are to be cooled from 380 oC to 130 oC.

Density of the hot gaseous mixture entering the heat exchanger = 49 Kg/m 3.

Density of the hot gaseous mixture leaving the heat exchanger = 76 Kg/m 3.

Viscosity of hot gas mixture = 0.0194 ×10-3 N-s/m2

Thermal conductivity of hot gas mixture= 0.145 W/mK

Flow rate of feed gas passing through the heat exchanger and entering the reactor = 3.5 kg/sec.

The gaseous mixture is heated from 30 oC to 335 oC

Density of the gas mixture entering the heat exchanger = 103 Kg/m 3.

Density of gas mixture leaving the heat exchanger = 53 Kg/m 3.

Viscosity of gas mixture = 0.0167 ×10-3 N-s/m2

Thermal conductivity of gas mixture= 0.124 W/mK

Heat load of Heat exchanger = 2800 kW

Reactor gases are passes through tubes while cold feed gas is circulated on shell side in counter
current flow manner.

Cupper tubes of inner diameter 10 mm and 2 mm wall thickness are used . length of tubes = 4.

The tubes are arranged on square pitch of 20 mm

Fouling resistance may be neglected.
