Subject History and Social Science (Geography)

Grade Level Third Grade
Learning Objective 3.5 The student will develop map skills by
a) Positioning and labeling the seven continents and five
oceans to create a world map;
b) Using the equator and prime meridian to identify the
Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western Hemispheres;
c) Locating the countries of Spain, England, and France;
d) Locating the regions in the Americas explored by
Christopher Columbus (San Salvador in the Bahamas),
Juan Ponce de Leon (near St. Augustine, Florida),
Jacques Cartier (near Quebec, Canada), and Christopher
Newport (Jamestown, Virginia).
Pedagogy

Activity I will first spend about a week teaching the material that
will be needed for students to complete the assignment. First, I
will use maps to identify and show students where the seven
continents and five oceans are, as well as the equator and the
prime meridian. Then, I will show students where the countries
of Spain, England, and France are in Europe. Finally, I will show
the students the regions in the Americas that the Christopher
Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, Jacques Cartier, and
Christopher Newport explored. I will then give all of them
blank maps to color and label as I guide them to do so. This
map will be able to be used for studying and reflecting back on
while completing the assignment.
The students will begin the assignment at the end of the
week or the beginning of the next week, depending on the
time left after teaching the material. Students must first
complete the map quiz “World: Continents and Oceans,”
obtaining a 100%. Once students complete the online map
quiz, they will then create their own custom quiz. Students
must include the following when creating their quiz:
 All 7 continents
 All 5 oceans
 Spain
 England
 France
 Regions explored by
o Christopher Columbus
o Juan Ponce de Leon
o Jacques Cartier
o Christopher Newport
