Methods of Test for Specific Gravity/Density

1. Scope
This Test Methods Specifies to determine the Density of Vulcanized Rubber to Verify the Weight
ratio of Ingredients used in Rubber Compound. This method is Control the quality of Rubber & in
calculation of the Mass of Rubber required to produce a given Volume of Material. Density is
frequently used to follow variations in physical structure or composition of Rubber Compound.

2. Apparatus
To conduct this tests used Analytical balance or instrument specifically designed for measurement
of density, accurate to 0.1 mg. Also need Immersion Vessel, Immersion Liquid (Distilled or
Deionized Water). Specimen wt. less than 10 gm.

3. Definitions
Density: Density is the mass per unit volume of a material.
Specific gravity: is a measure of the ratio of mass of a given volume of material at Room
Temperature to the same volume of deionized water.
Mass: Quantity of matter contained in a body

4. Test Process
Determination of Specific Gravity/Density – Weigh the test piece to the nearest milligram in air.
Repeat the weighing with the test piece, immersed in freshly boiled and cooled distilled water at a
standard temperature, contained in the vessel, Remove air bubble adhering to the test piece and
determine the mass to the nearest milligram, watching the pointer for a few seconds to make sure
that it does not drift gradually as a result of convection currents. A very fine wire is recommended
as a supporting medium. Use the Weight of Specimens in air & Water. Evaluate the Specific
gravity /Density of Rubber Compound in SI Units “g/cc”.

5. Results
From the above Test process we get the Value of Specific Gravity/Density of Vulcanized Rubber
which ensure the Quality of Rubber to help in Processing & Application Area.
