2. Types of drama
There are four types of drama; the comedy, tragedy, tragicomedy and
melodrama they are all have the plot, characters , music and dialogue. The
difference are:
a. Comedy
It is a type of drama that is intended the audience to laugh. It is mostly has
a happy ending. That tradition came from the Ancient Greek theatre,
where comedy first emerged as a form of drama. “Comedy is a serious
business. A serious business with only one purpose — to make people
laugh.”
b. Tragedy
The most common ideas in tragedy are murders, deaths, insanity and
pain. It is a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending
which is the downfall of the main character. Tragedy first appeared in the
theatre of Ancient Greece. Like comedy, it lived through Roman Empire,
Medieval times, Renaissance and other. Tragedy sometimes relates their
play on what is really happening in our society.
c. Tragicomedy
It is a special type of drama which combines the elements of tragedy and
comedy. It means that the play may be sad but will have a happy ending.
Mostly the characters are exaggerated and sometimes there might be a
happy ending after a series of unfortunate events. Tragicomedy emerged
in the times of Roman Empire. Plautus, the roman dramatist was the first
to write a tragicomedy and use the term.
d. Melodrama
It is a type of drama in which everything is hyperbolized. Themes in
melodramas are simple and without any unpredictable plot twist. The main
purpose of this is not to tell a story but to awaken feelings in the audience.
The stories here is mostly love stories with beautiful heroines, charming
heroes and scary villains. Originated much later than comedy, tragedy and
tragicomedy. It is first appeared in France at the end of 18 th century. It
reached Britain and became one of the most popular types of drama in the
19th century.
