Introduction of Organization

Shakti Samuha is known as the first organization in the world established and run by the
survivors of human trafficking. In 1996 the India government raided in Indian red light areas and
rescued around 500 Nepali, Indian and Bengali girls. All were kept in government shelter home
of India, where the behaviour and environment of shelter authority was very rough and violent.
The government of Nepal refused to bring the girls back in the country with stigma and blaming
that they would import HIV and spread all over the country. Then 7 non-governmental
organizations(WOREC Nepal, ABC Nepal, CWIN, Maiti Nepal, Shanti Punarsthapana Griha,
Nawa Jyoti and Shtri Shakti) led to bring girls back to the country.

After few months WOREC Nepal organize 10 days training on basic health and life skill training
including human trafficking issues, after the training we came to know that, being trafficked is
not our fault but the society is to be blamed. Then we realized and restored our self-esteem. We
15 members, united together and converted our tears into the power to fight against human
trafficking. Afterward the Shakti Samuha, which means “Power Group” was set up. Shakti
Samuha has been working in the campaign against human trafficking since 1996 but succeeded
to register our organization officially in 2000.

Consequently the Shakti Samuha had been organizing, empowering and returning the trafficked
survivors by providing them shelter support, legal aid and enhancing survivors capacity. We
have also formulated survivor groups of human trafficking and high risk groups (adolescents)
based in the poorest communities in order to pass the message about the risk of human
trafficking, violence, sexual abuse, etc. Now we are reaching out to the fifteen districts where
trafficking is prevalent making a united stand against human trafficking.

Shakti Samuha believes that if the survivors are given equal opportunities, they are able to live
independently and with dignity. Shakti Samuha has incitement to be a voice of voiceless and take
leadership to ensure the rights of survivors of human trafficking.
