The story under analysis is called «Eveline», written by James Joyce

Theme: fear( threat) before new life( with husband); threat of the beginning of new
chapter in life.

Idea: Sometimes we(women) fell scared to begin a new life away from parents home.

Genre : short story

The plan of narration: chronological and fragmented, as we can observe flashbacks

about Eveline’s mother and her childhood.

Time and space: i presume it can be England

Compositional design:

-the plot structure is open as the denouement is missing ( we don’t know the ending of
the story whether Eveline sailed or not , so author gives us area for thinking)

1) exposition occupies first two paragraphs - where we get to know who is a main
character and about her childhood and changes of her life since then —bricks
houses
2) Story / complication occupies main part of the story- we get to know about her life
till the moment when she is about to start a new life with her husband and her
feelings about all this situation.
3) Story reaches the climax when she cried «NO!NO!NO!» and that ‘she must escape’
4) There is no denouement.

Point of view: 3rd person narrative, observer

Images
1)characters there are two main characters
Eveline ( she is described implicitly with Josh by her deeds and thoughts she is a
round character) and

Frank Evelyn's husband (he is characterised directly :we know his traits of character
-we know that «he is very kind manly openhearted» and he is represented as the
image of a ‘Eveline’s saver’ —- he is described explicitly, he is a flat character)

image of saver

Emotional atmosphere- is rather tense till the end of the story.

Language - neutral

- Stylistical devices are use to create an atmosphere ( parenthesis, inversions) and to

reproduce the emotions of Eveline( ellipsis, rh. questions) ,create an image (epithets)
