Used to

Song 1: Somebody That I Used Know

Song 2: Someone You Loved, solia o acostumbraba

Used to + infinitive
We use this expression to talk about habits or repeated actions in the past which we don't do in
the present. We also use it to talk about states in the past which are no longer true.
For example:

I used to have long hair (but now I have short hair).

He used to smoke (but now he doesn't smoke).
They used to live in india (but now they live in Germany).

Watch out! With the negative and the question it's 'use' and not 'used':
For example:

Did you use to be a teacher?

Did he use to study French?
She didn't use to like chocolate, but she does now.
I didn't use to want to have a nice house.

times are usually different.

used to (Reading & Questions)

Molly Hornby was a young girl in the 1960s. Read what she says about it.
“I was a young girl in the 1960s. My friends and I used to do a lot of things which shocked our
parents. We used to do things our mothers never did. We cut our hair, we wore short skirts, we
smoked, and went dancing. We danced to the music of Elvis Presley and the Beatles. We also got
the chance to see the Beatles live at a concert once. It was amazing. My father went fishing once
a week. He always wished that I would accompany him, but fishing was not my cup of
tea. Instead my friends and I went for picnics in the surrounding area quite often. My boyfriend
had a car, a 1960 Ford Falcon, so he always picked us up and we often drove to Brighton. We
went to the pictures twice a week and I loved to watch films with Marlon Brando and Elizabeth
Taylor, especially the ‘Reflections in a Golden Eye’ starring both of them. I still love to watch
this film. It’s my favourite. I can remember it all so clearly.”
MY STORY: Before this situation

I used to go to take my classes to the university on Wednesdays and Saturdays, now I see

the same classes but in a virtual way. I used to go with my baby to the park three times a week,

but now I do recreational activities with her at home. I used to go with my husband and my baby

to my parents' house, now we see each other by video call to find out how they are.

I used to not exercise before, now with so much free time, I have exercised a lot. I used to

not cook frequently before, now I make desserts for my family every day. Usually I used to go

shopping, it is an activity that I really enjoy, now I try not to leave home. Before I used to get up

early, now I can sleep a little more.

MY FAMILY

My family used to not stay at home, now with the pandemic they must stay at home, My

brothers used to go play soccer every week, now they are bored at home. My parents used to

travel constantly, now they have fun with board games so they don't get bored. My brothers

didn't used to be at home on the weekend, now they stay at home watching televisión.

My family didn't visit me often, but now we miss each other too much. For Easter we

used to go to the pool with my family, now we must postpone the trip. On Wednesdays we used

to go with my parents and my baby to eat ice cream, now I really miss those moments because I

can't see them. My family and I did not used to miss each other so much because we saw each

other constantly, now we need each other.
