MY NURSING PHILOSOPHY

Ever since I could remember, I’ve always wanted to help people. I didn’t know

how at the time but, I knew I wanted to be a healer. When my mother was a trauma

patient at Jackson Memorial Hospital, I knew I found my passion. The Jackson

Memorial trauma team saved my mother’s life and now, I want to comfort others who

really need it. The career of Nursing is a large and diverse professional field that

requires many technical skills and knowledge in order to practice in a competent and

ethical manner. The Miami Dade College Associates in nursing program defines the

practice of nursing as a career with an overall goal of providing safe, effective care, and

promotes physiologic and psychosocial integrity and to meet patient needs. There are 4

main domains under the Nursing profession and those are Nursing, Environment,

Health and Person.

Nursing encompasses a wide range and variety of careers available to

individuals who obtain a license. Personally, nursing is a profession that requires

attention to detail, patience, and perseverance even in the toughest situations. Nurses

care for patients on a wide scale from acute care to chronic care. The overall goal is to

provide optimal care and make their time while in the hospital or health care setting as

meaningful as possible.

The Environment that a nurse works in plays a vital role in their ability to perform.

The environment needs to be organized, professional and built around teamwork.

Working in a high stress environment and needing to collaborate with other health care

professionals requires the ability to work to handle multiple personalities and being able

to communicate effectively regardless of the situation. Compassion is a major

component in the nursing field however, it is not always a character trait that everyone

encompasses, and it can make the environment a difficult place to work.

The next domain is Health. Health is the underlying topic surrounding nursing. As

nurses, we are to take care of others during their time of need and also educate them

on how to prevent future health complications. Keeping patients on top of their health is

essential in order to help them manage their diseases and also prevent the spread of

diseases.

The last domain I will speak on is Person, or self. Nursing is a career of the heart

and in order to help others you have to be in tune within yourself. Having the ability to

put aside personal life and focus on making an impact in someone’s stay while under

your care is the main goal.

Nursing is one of the most diverse fields to work in. It takes a strong will and

drive to take on this career and to be able to handle what is thrown in their path. These

domains are essential in order to fully understand and thrive in this career.
