The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed

of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300
kilometers over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers. The reef is
located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The Great
Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single
structure made by living organisms. It appears that it was first discovered in
1768 by Louis de Bougainville.

The Great Barrier Reef is a structure which is composed of and built by

billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of
life much more impressive than any other marine ecosystems.
About 10 million years ago, the level of the sea became much lower so
this fact created the perfect environment for microorganisms to evolve and
survive. These complex living structures can grow up to 3 centimeters in
diameter and can survive up to 150 meters under the surface because of their
permanent need of sunlight.
