Tutorial #1 Review of basic structural analysis 
 
1. Forming your team 
You will be assigned into a team of 4 students. Your team members will be attending the same tutorial 
session. Your team will work together in the following tasks: 
1.  The Steel Beam Competition 
2. Group design project ­ low­rise steel structure 
 
2. Review of truss analysis 
 
Using method of section, determine forces in members ​ cd​ Cd​
, ​ CD​
, ​ BC​
, ​ cC​
 and ​ . 

 
3.Review of beam analysis  
Sketch (i) shear force diagram, (ii) bending moment diagram and (iii) deflected shapes for the following 
determinate beams. Arrange the sketch vertically so that you will see their relationships. 
 
Important observations​ : 
1. Bending moment is POSITIVE under horizontal line. This is the British sign convention. i.e. 
bending moment in tension side. American sign convention is the opposite. 
2. Bending moment co­exists with shear. 
3. Slope of bending moment = shear force 
4. Max moment occurs when shear = 0 
5. when moment changes sign, it is the “inflection point”. i.e. from concave up to concave down or 
vice versa.
