The seven continents of the world are separated from
‘each other by large stretches of water called oceans, There
are five oceans in the world. They are the Pacific Ocean, the
Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and the
Southern Ocean.
‘The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest in the world.
Itis almost circular in shape. It separates the Americas from :
Asia and Australia. The world's deepest trench, the Mariana Pcie Ocean
Trench, which has a depth of 10,884 m, lies init
‘The second largest ocean is the Atlantic Ocean which separates North and South America
from Europe and Africa. Its shaped like the letter'S. A unique feature ofthis ocean is the
Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a submerged mountain range, which has several high peaks that form
{slands in the ocean.
‘The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean and isthe only ocean that is named after 8
county, ie, India. Asia lies to its north, Australia to its east and Africa to its west. The two
important parts of this ocean are the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal
‘The Southem Ocean surrounds the continent of Antarctica. It is formed by the merging
of the southern parts of the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean and
lies in the southern hemisphere.
The smallest ocean is the Arctic Ocean. Since its located mostly within the Arctic Circle, itis
covered with ice all the time. The North Pole is located hara. itis tha northernmost point on
