EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

LESSON PLAN Format

Student Teacher: Maria Fernandes                      Grade: 1 st

Subject: Math

Time Needed for Lesson:  1 hour                      Lesson Concept: Subtraction

P.A STANDARD(S) (Write out standards):

Standard - CC.2.1.1.B.2 Use place value concepts to represent amounts of tens and ones and to
compare two digit numbers.

Standard - CC.2.2.1.A.1 Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within
20.

BIG IDEAS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS;

How are relationships represented mathematically?

How can mathematics support effective communication?

How can recognizing repetition or regularity assist in solving problems more efficiently?

How is mathematics used to quantify, compare, represent, and model numbers?

What does it mean to estimate or analyze numerical quantities?

What makes a tool and/or strategy appropriate for a given task?

What makes a tool/strategy appropriate for a given task?

How are relationships represented mathematically?

OBJECTIVE(S) (Be sure to include all four parts):

The students will be able to subtract one or two single-digit numbers together.

The students will be able to recognize the symbol for subtraction.

The students will be able to identify patterns and put the numbers in the correct sequence.

The students will be able to analyze with different objects to find the subtraction to 20.

MATERIALS:

  Pencils
 Paper 11
 Ten Frame 4
 Color counters in the same group of 20, 20, 12, 12
 4 bowls
 20 sweets
  Flashcards to do subtractions
 3 envelopes with answer, solution and equals and minus cut out from the paper
 Spinner A and B

ACTIVITIES (There are three sections here):

OPENING (Introduction, purpose, hook)

The teacher will introduce the class by telling the students how they will work in the station's
centers.

(Body (Bulleted step by step/differentiation must be included)

 Station rotation centers:

Station 1

 Spin and Subtract:

The teacher uses spinner A to get to the number. Then uses spinner B to get another number.
Then the students subtract the two numbers by using a ten frame mat. The student who gets the
right subtraction gets 1 point.

Station 2

Subtract with Flash cards:

The students will work in pairs or group one will have flash cards. The other students will have
ten frame mat and 12 color counters which will help them to subtract.

or

The students can work on the IPad individually to solve the additional problems count on to add
within 20.

Station 3

Montessori Subtraction:

The teacher will have one bowl with 20 sweets and 3 bowls. The student has to solve the
problem which he/she removes from the envelope. After solving the problem the student has to
place the answer next to the solution.

 CLOSURE:

The teacher will write a subtraction review equation on the board. Then ask students to solve
using their linking cubes. Have students share how they solved the equation.

Or ask students to share what they learned in today’s math lesson.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:

The teacher can use the dots with the ten frames to solve the problem of subtraction.

The teacher can also use the classroom number display or the things in the classroom to explain
subtraction of numbers.

The students can work on the IPad individually to solve the additional problems count on to add
within 20.

 ASSESSMENT:

The students will be assessed for formative assessment by their individual work in their handouts
in their respective station.

The students will also be assessed through visual observations made throughout the lesson, as
students are working with their linking cubes to solve for subtraction in their workbook.

For the summative assessment, the teacher will give the students complete each subtraction.

SELF-ASSESSMENT/REFLECTION: (Complete this section if you have taught this lesson

to peers or in clinical placement):
Station one working with the spinner was fun activity.

Station two working with the flash card was good for level 1 and 2 but 3 level was not able to do
the activity. Next time to count the points to show the evidence as to how much the students
work together.

Station three working with Montessori math was a fun activity. But for higher level students it
needs challenging activities.
