Intro: New 007 Laser Weapon - Revealed!

The world's first look at James Bond's new blu-burning laser weapon! Watch it burn through things and learn how to make your own!

That's me playing James Bond in the video intro!

(I built that in After Effects)

Step 1: What You Need...

1. Walther PPK CO2 Pistol
2. Laser guide for pistol. Mine was from a JKX-313. The Umarex just didn't fit the bill.
3. Get the Blu Diode Here
4. Housing for Laser Diode also from Build-a-Blue-Laser
5. LM317, 100 ohm variable pot, 1 ohm resistor, circuit board.

http://www.instructables.com/id/New-007-Laser-Weapon-Revealed/
Step 2: Get the Diode...
You can skip this step and just buy the Blu Diode HERE
Disassemble the XBOX360 HD DVD Drive. Here is a good tutorial from The LLAMA
Then extract the diode from the drive carriage. Use care!

NOTE: Not all XBOX 360 HD DVD drives have a 150mW diode. You have to bench test it to measure the mW rating or just buy the diode.

Step 3: Install it in the Housing

Install the diode in an Aixiz-style housing which you can get here and add 2 wires observing the pinout diagram.

How to Install it: First remove the laser warning label and unscrew the housing so it is in two parts. You may have to use pliers or vice-grips or a vice to unscrew it. If it
came with an exisiting laser diode in it (5mw), remove it and the circuit board leaving on the housing. The new blu-ray diode gets pressed into the housing. Be sure it is
straight and flat around all the edges. I used a pair of vice-grips and carefully squeezed the diode into the housing. Once you have it in your hands, you will see how it is
done.

http://www.instructables.com/id/New-007-Laser-Weapon-Revealed/
Step 4: Build the Driver Circuit
Build the driver circuit on the smallest circuit board you can find. I built mine and then "dremeled" the board down to size. Using a multi-meter, measure the mA
output and adjust the 100 ohm pot so that it is just under 150mw. DON'T run it higher than that. Be sure to discharge the cap before soldering in the diode.

Step 5: Modify the Laser Guide

Remove the laser and the LED from the laser guide leaving the wiring for the batteries intact. I bent back the tabs in the battery compartment and added one more
button cell battery to make a total of 6 volts. Then I installed the circuit and laser diode in the laser guide and attached it to the pistol.

Step 6: Use It
The blu diode should be real bright. Use the collimating lens on the housing to focus the beam to a point. It will burn a number of things. It will also "write" on thermal
paper but that did not show up good on the video.

Disclaimer: CAUTION! As you know...lasers can be dangerous! Never point them at any living object! Do not look at the beam! This is not a toy, and this
should not be used like a conventional laser pointer. In other words, don't use it in presentations, or to play with pets, or allow children to use it. It should
only be operated by responsible persons who understand and respect the potential laser safety hazards.

Have fun, Be safe!

very interesting and seems pretty simple. Is there any way one could increase the burning power of the laser to cut, say, weapon-grade 1060 carbon steel?

because this is safe in the hands of evil?
i mean come on what if oddjob got a hold of this?
its about as safe as the man with the Golden Gun!!
only let Bond... James bond wield this...
wow i could make a lot more references but i chose not too...

Sounds like an ad for a website that sells $10 blue lasers for $50 (yes, $50).

No trigger control, and uses a voltage regulator instead of a dc/dc converter...not really a good choice, will have 1/10th the battery life. Thanks but uh...nope.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you bench test s laser for its mW

Opcom says: May 1, 2010. 5:33 PM REPLY

if you do not have a laser power meter, you may be able to make a laser power meter yourself using a quite small metal square of known area and
material (copper or aluminum come to mind), and from books you can know the metal-to-air thermal resistance. Then you can coat the plate with carbon
or soot or flat black paint if nothing else is available (lampblack may do). Then attach a thermal probe to the backside of the plate. Measure the normal
temp of the plate, then heat with laser until equilibrium is reached, and knowing the ambient temp, temperature rise, and the thermal characteristics of
what you have made, you can reasonably estimate the laser power. Note the soot or black coating is intended to absorb the laser beam, that is, prevent
its diffuse or specular reflection, so that as much as possible of the laser energy is transferred to the metal plate as heat. There might be an instructible
on making your own laser power meter. I would not doubt it with all the geniuses areound here.

Thanks I'll try it maybe after i build the laser and get it working right .

Nice job Kipkay! That is a real classic hack there. From the frontispiece, I admit I was sort of expecting a 1064nm pulse to issue forth though. Maybe the blue
jobbie could become the aiming device, and after gutting the toy gun and finding a souped up SSY-1.. well nevermind .. probably a bad idea, ehe.

ca u make this into a pen and with another switch that will change the voltage of the laser so u can have a safe laser and a dangerous laser in 1

Xellers says: Jan 12, 2010. 6:13 PM REPLY

Yes, all that you would need to do is have two fixed resistors in place of the variable resistor in the driver circuit and switch between them - one would
increase the LM317's voltage and the other one would decrease it.

u can use two lasers and two switches but that isnt quite the same

MikeDaMan says: Dec 29, 2009. 9:21 PM REPLY

It might be a while since you asked this, but just google: How to Calculate Wattage. In the driver circuit figure out the resistance, amps, and volts. I know
for a fact that the Blu Diode can handle up to 170 mW (milli-watts) Try using Laser Pointer Forums to help.

I'm not sure what pins of the 100 ohm pot get soldered where. I got a kit with a very similar schematic to this one. Also, where does the middle pin om the
LM317 get connected to? I'm really confused, any help would be appreciated.

oniamien says: Apr 9, 2009. 2:20 PM REPLY

Does anyone know if you can "under drive" (i.e. run at a lower wattage) this diode? At this output it can apparently burn things, and while that is cool i might
want to turn down the power if I was going to use it as a pointer for a presentation, and I don't want to burn the display surface. Also, people mention making
a heat sink for the diode. What shape is it? (i.e. a pipe fitted around the diode (I have read ones like this) or one with a lot of fins for surface area?) Also,
does it need to be able to vent a lot of heat to the out side or just absorb heat itself on and dissipate more slowly?

seandogue says: Aug 15, 2009. 10:09 AM REPLY

Generally, heat sinks for these are little more than a properly drilled section of aluminum. For higher wattage laser diodes, fins might be used, and for
really high power or stabilized lasers, one would use an active cooling system, combining a heat sink, peltier cooler and controller.

LaserRain says: Apr 23, 2009. 5:00 AM REPLY

Just shove it in a chunk of alu.

MikeDaMan says: Apr 18, 2009. 8:53 AM REPLY

Just set it so that it is 60 - 101mA This will ensure a long life for your diode! It probably won't burn, but it set at 100mA it could. This diode is meant to
handle up to 100mA so be very careful! KipKay, I got it built, but not in the 007, Just a regular pointer!

LaserRain says: Apr 23, 2009. 5:01 AM REPLY

Use a driver at 115ma and you should get 100mw plenty to light matches and pop balloons!

bandtled says: Apr 23, 2009. 11:13 PM REPLY

You can also check HERE for a complete driver kit with all the above parts plus a 9 volt clip and the diode already inside the focusing module
with soldered wires. Your one stop shop for this project. Why waste money on other solutions.

McGenius says: Jan 13, 2009. 8:24 AM REPLY

is the capacitor in the circuit an absolutely necessary component? cause i've heard stories about the diode becoming separated from the capacitor and
reconnected an instant later, and since the cap is charged up, the juice instantly fries the diode. this happened to me last night possibly because i did not
solder it well enough. but back to my original question. is the capacitor necessary?

seandogue says: Aug 15, 2009. 10:07 AM REPLY

The cap stabilizes the output of the LM317. Not *absolutely necessary but advised. What's missing? The input side capacitor, which helps to reduce
damp turn on spikes. Also not absolutely necessary, but advised. Finally, there is no switch shown in the project schematic. Inserting or pulling the
battery is just plain silly to turn the device on/off.

LaserRain says: Apr 23, 2009. 5:03 AM REPLY

I think it stops voltage spikes. Just dis-charge the cap

bandtled says: Apr 11, 2009. 9:13 PM REPLY

It's not really necessary, but its function is to filter out any transients or small voltage spikes in the line. Without it there's just raw voltage to the diode and
any slight variations or little spikes in the line due to switches or what not can be bad to the diode n the long run. It's best to have a stable voltage to the
diode with filtering which is what the cap does to an extent. It's like filling a bucket with water that has a hole in the bottom. No matter how fast you dump
water into the bucket, the hole will always drain at the same rate. That's pretty much how a capacitor works.

Alexizupinhea says: Mar 3, 2009. 5:16 PM REPLY
Hey, i'm not the best solderer either, and I've broken my first 4 diodes probably due to this reason. I have been successful in my last two builds though.
I'd recommend soldering the cap directly to the diode (will fit in the aixiz). This way, its almost impossible for it to ever get disconnected then reconnected
and destroy it. Good luck, you'll get it eventually. It took me my 5th try, hopefully you get yours sooner.

lozank says: Feb 12, 2009. 2:06 PM REPLY

Absolutely! Without the resistor the cap would fry the diode anyways! I would recommend you just double check your solder joints.
