SP3D Structure Tutorial: Editing Grids

Session 3: Editing Grids

Objective:
By the end of this session, you will be able to:

• Edit the grids in a model.

Prerequisite Sessions:
• SP3D Overview
• SP3D Common Sessions
• Grids: An Overview

Overview:
A grid system is a coordinate system and a set of reference planes and/or cylinders defined
relative to that coordinate system. You can create, edit, or delete the reference planes/cylinders.

• The Place Elevation Plane command creates one or more elevation planes.
• The Place Grid Plane command creates one or more planes along either the x (or East)
axis or the y (or North) axis.
• The Place Radial Grid command places one or more concentric cylinders or radial
planes passing through the center of the cylinders.

When you select one or multiple consecutive planes (or cylinders) on the same coordinate system
axis, you can edit the position of the planes using the commands displayed on the Edit ribbon.

Steps for Placing an Elevation Plane:

Place an elevation plane in a coordinate system. The settings for the coordinate system, type of
elevation plane, reference plane, and offset are as follows:

• Coordinate System: U04 CS

• Type of Elevation Plane: Top of Steel
• Reference: Origin
• Offset: 26 ft 0.00 in
• Copies: 0
• Nesting Level: Primary

The new elevation plane created will generate grid lines as shown in Figure 1.

1. Define your workspace to show Unit U04.

2. Switch to the Grids tasks, if not already in the Grids task.

3. Set the Active Permission Group to Layout.

4. On the vertical toolbar, click the Place Elevation Plane button.

5. On the Elevation Plane Horizontal ribbon, select U04 CS as the coordinate system in the
CS drop-down list, as shown in Figure 3.

The Type drop-down list on the Elevation Plane Horizontal ribbon displays a list of
elevation plane types, which are defined in the Catalog and can be customized by the
system administrator. The type of elevation plane can be used to help in the generation
of Drawings and Reports.

6. In the Type drop-down list, select the Top Of Steel option as shown in Figure 4.

7. Click the Properties button to open the Elevation Plane Properties dialog box. Set
Naming Rule to Imperial Position, as shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5: Naming Rule Option in the Elevation Plane Properties Dialog Box

The next step is to specify values for the Reference, Offset, Copies, and Nesting Level
parameters on the Elevation Plane Horizontal ribbon:

• The Reference can be the origin or a selected elevation plane.

• When you are in the Elevation Plane Position smartstep of the Elevation Plane
Placement command, the software prompts you to enter a point to position the
plane. The Offset box dynamically indicates the distance from the reference defined
by your current cursor position. You can click in the graphic view to create the plane
at a graphically selected location. If you use the step function of the PinPoint
command, this can be a very easy way to position the planes without keying in the
values. If you key in an offset, the plane is placed when you press the Enter key.
After the elevation plane is created, the command cycles to again accept input for the
next plane position.
• The command defaults to the last used nesting level. You must set the nesting level
before entering an offset by data point or by key in since that creates the plane.
• The nesting level is used by some of the naming rules provided in the default
catalog. Nesting level can be Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary. This represents a
hierarchy along an axis. Between two adjacent planes, a difference of only one level
is allowed. Therefore, you can place secondary planes between two primary planes
and tertiary planes between two secondary planes.
• The Copies option allows you to place multiple elevation planes. It indicates the
number of additional elevation planes to be placed in the grid. By default, the value
in this box is 0. With this value, a single elevation plane is placed by using the
specified reference plane as the starting point and the offset as the distance to the
new elevation plane.

8. On the Place Elevation Plane ribbon, set the Reference, Offset, Copies, and Nesting
Level parameters, as shown in Figure 6.

11. Press the ESC key to exit the command.

Steps for Editing Single Elevation Plane:

Editing an elevation plane is very similar to creating the plane. When you select the plane by
clicking it in the Workspace Explorer or on the graphic Ruler, the Edit ribbon for the elevation
plane is automatically displayed. To change the offset of the elevation plane currently at 15 ft,
perform the following steps:

Tip:
• While working in the Grids task, you can use the Grid Entities filter to locate
any grid system design objects, such as coordinate systems, elevation planes,
and grid planes. Since it is easy to point to what you want graphically in the
Workspace Explorer without getting the Quick Pick. It is best to set the Locate
Filter to Grids Entities and leave it.

3. Select the elevation plane (at 15 ft) to be edited in the Workspace Explorer, as shown in
Figure 11.

Tip:
• You can also select the plane by clicking the check mark on the Ruler. Display
the Rulers for a grid system by using the View > Rulers… command.

4. Key in the new offset value, 10 ft, in the Offset box. The changes are committed to the
database as you enter them through the controls on the Edit ribbon. The ribbon remains
displayed until you select something else in the SP3D window.

Tip:
• To change the position of the plane by graphic entry of a point, click the
Elevation Plane Position smartstep next to the Properties button, as shown in
Figure 13.

• You can edit all the properties of the elevation plane, including the permission
group of the plane, by clicking the Properties option on the Edit ribbon, as
shown in Figure 14.

Clicking the Properties button will open the Elevation Plane Properties dialog
box, as shown in Figure 15.

Steps for Editing the Positions of Multiple Elevation Planes:

You can edit the positions of multiple consecutive elevation planes. When you select multiple
consecutive elevation planes, the Edit ribbon for changing multiple planes is displayed. You can
edit the common properties of the elevation planes such as the nesting level, type, and
permission group. You can also edit the positions of the elevation planes.

1. Click the Select button on the vertical toolbar.

3. In the Workspace Explorer, click the first elevation plane at 26 ft to select it. Hold the
Shift key on your keyboard and click the second elevation plane at 10 ft to select it, as
shown in Figure 18.

• The Edit ribbon for modifying multiple planes displays, as shown in Figure 18.
There are two position editing options provided in the Reference drop-down list
on the ribbon:
o Relative: The Relative option moves the planes such that the distance
between them is equal to the offset you enter. The first plane of the set
remains in the same position.
o Previous: The Previous option moves the entire set of planes, keeping
their relative positions to one another but changing the offset from the
first plane of the set to the previous reference plane. This option is not
available if there is no plane at a position in front of the selected set of
planes.

4. Type a new offset value 15 ft in the Offset box with the Relative option selected in the
Reference drop-down list. This will change the offset between the two elevation planes,
as shown in Figure 20.

Steps for Placing and Editing a Grid Plane:

Placing and editing a grid plane is exactly the same procedure as placing and editing an
elevation plane. The axis control defines the axis on which the planes will be created. To place
the grid plane, set the parameters as follows:
Coordinate System: U04 CS
Axis: X
Type: N-S Grid Plane
Reference: Origin
Copies: 0
Nesting Level: Primary
Name Rule: Imperial Position

Axis: Y
Type: E-W Grid Plane
Reference: Origin
Copies: 1

11. Key in the Offset value as 15 ft and press the Enter key to commit the transaction

12. Press the ESC key to exit the command.

Steps for Placing and Editing a Radial Grid Cylinders:

Placing and editing a radial grid cylinder or plane is exactly the same procedure as placing and
editing an elevation plane. The Axis control selection of C creates the cylinders. The Axis control
selection of R creates the radial grid planes.

As with the rectangular grid planes, a smartstep is provided to select which elevation planes will
create grid lines and arcs at the intersection with the radial grid cylinders and planes. Radial grid
cylinders and planes together form a radial grid system, as shown in Figure 26.
