JEELIVE
(VSEPR) Theory

The shape of a molecule affects how it interacts with other molecules and that in
turn can give rise to all kinds of interesting phenomena.

Every medicine you take, odor you smell, or flavor you taste depends
on part or all of one molecule fitting together with another.
(VSEPR) Theory

Postulates:
❖ The valence shell is taken as a sphere with the electron pairs locaising on
the spherical surface at maximum distance from one another.

❖ A multiple bond is treated as if it is a single electron pair and the two or

three electron pairs of a multiple bond are treated as a single super pair.

❖ The repulsive interaction of electron pairs decrease in the order

Lone-pair-lone pair > lone pair-bonded pair > bonded pair-bonded pair
