LEAVE IT in the exam room. nguage Exam May 2011 The C1 level oral test BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEST Duration ofthe test:25 minutes Mode of participation: Candidates are testedin pairs and converse with each other. Content: a. Warm-up: Examiner asks each candidate a few ice-breaking questions (age, studies/work, hobbies) not assessed, ‘minute for both] b. Open-ended response: The candidate responds to a single question posed by the examiner expressing and justifying histher opinion about particular issuettopic. [4 minutes for both} . Mediation and open-ended conversation: Candidates carry out a conversation in order to complete a task based on inputfroma Greek text [15 minutes forboth] Examiner candidate roles: In Activity 1 (open-ended response) the examiner does not interact with candidates; s/he poses a question and each candidate responds. In Activity 2 (mediation and open-ended conversation) the examiner does not normal with the candidates; s/he sets the task and the candidates interact with each other. However, fone candidate is unable tocary outthe task, the examiner takes the role ofthe interlocutor. TEST MATERIALS The Candidate Booklet The Candidate Booklet contains: ‘© Information aboutthe test and guidelines on how o carry itout (pp. 2-4). ‘+ TheOralTestAssessment Criteria Grid (p.5). ‘* Greek texts on pp. 6-16. The heading on each page indicates the theme and context of talk prompted by these texts. The first half of the Candidate Booklet (pages 6 to 10) contains the Greek texts that Candidate A must read in order to do this activity. The second hall of the Booklet (pages 11 to 15) contains the Greek texts that Candidate B must read in order to do the activity. The last page (page 16) contains extra texts, which are relevant to those on pages 8 and 13. They may be used if, at the end of the test day, there are three candidates left, in which case Activity 2 will have to be conducted wit three candidates instead of two. In uch a case, assign one of the tasks connectedto the texson pages 8 and 13 and alsouse the relevanttexton page 16. ‘The Examiner Pack ‘The Examiner Pack contains: ‘© the test items, i.e. questions for Activity 1 and the tasks for Activity 2, the Interocutor Frame forthe C1 level oral test, Areminder of potential trouble spots during the exam, the Rating Scale for C1 level. TEST PROCEDURE ‘* Throughoutthe exam, there are two assessors and two candidates in the examination room, ‘* Both assessors evaluate the candidate and filin heirpart ofthe “Oral Production Evaluation Form’. ‘* The assessor who has the role of Evaluator sits on the side andis silent. S/he listens, observes, takes notes, and gives amark foreach candidate's performance, using the "Oral Production Evaluation Form’. ‘+ The assessor who has the role of Examiner's the one who sits facing the two candidates and who conducts the test, interacting with them. S/he rates candidates when they have left the examination room. So, besides being the Examiner, she has the role of Evaluator 2. ‘* The candidates take tums in doing the required task first This means that if candidate Ais the first one asked to respond to the question of Activity 1, itis candidate B thatis asked to begin Activity 2 '* Assessors should change roles frequently. It is recommended that they change roles as Evaluator 1 and Examiner (+Evaluator 2) when they have conducted the Oral Test with 2-3 paits of candidates. However, the frequency ofrole changeis upto them. ‘* Both people conducting he Oral Testare equally responsible for carrying out he test successfully. le 4 PAGE 2/ Guidelines nguage Exam May 2011 Before the Oral Test begins: ‘¢ Make sure that you prepare forthe tes for atleast 1”4hours. Study the Candidate Booklet and the Examiner Pack in aroommade available for you. ‘Work with colleague and discuss the tasks and texts, helping each other understand what each taskrequires Role-play one ortwotasks and see how they work or you. ‘Acquaint yourselthoroughly withthe Interlacutor Frame provided inthe Examiner Pack. Examiners are expected to have prepared themselves fr the test by having become familar with the information ‘contained in the Handouts developed for the Oral Examiner Seminars. However, study carefully the Rating Scale in the Examiner Pack toremind yourselfofthe assessment citeria Also: ‘© Find outinwhich examination oom you wil be conducting the oral test and who your co-assessoris going fo be, + Decide which one of youwillhave therole of Examiner frst. ‘¢ Make sure thatthe desksin the examination room are setup propery so that > candidates are siting side by side, > the Examineris facing the candidates, > thedesk of Evaluator tis atsome aistance from the candidates but allows visual contactwith them. ‘© Make sure you have allthe material you need to conduct the test. Bring your Candidate Booklet with you into the ‘examination rooms well as the Examiner Pack containing the questions and asks. ‘¢ Make sure also that there are two more Candidate Booklets in the room, one for each of the two candidates. In ‘case there are three candidates, give the third candidate your co-assessor's booklet. During the Oral Test remember: In the Examiner Pack Activity 1 ‘© ForActvity 1, there are questions for younger and older candidates. Choose afferent question for each candidate, taking nto account what you know about himiher Activity 2 + ForActvty2, there are atleast two task ypes tobe used with each pairof Greektexts ‘When using the material: ‘© When carrying out Activity 1, do not change or rephrase the question. If one candidate hesitates, repeat the ‘question more slowly this time, clarify or explain one word but ony if you are asked to. ‘© InAcivty 2, ifthe conversation comes toa halt, does not flow ori one candidate seems to be holding the floor without allowing the other candidate to participate, intervene to facilitate the low of conversation ‘fone ofthe two candidates is not relaying information from the Greek text, it may make the decision making process impossible. Therefore, you might have to intervene in order to remind hinvher that sihe must relay information from the text. ‘© fone ofthe two candidates is completely unable to respond tothe requirements of Actity 2, then the examiner takes the roe ofthe interfocutor inorder to carry out the task with the other candidate, ‘© Ingeneral, when carrying out Activities 1 and 2, you should not change the question or task assigned, but you are allowed to encourage and to help the candidate when facing problems with a specific task. Any extra help providedto candidatesby the examiner shouldbe taken into accountin the assignment ofthe final mark. ‘© Choose different pairs of texts fr each pairof candidates, always keeping in mind each candidate's age, gender, educational background, social experiences and interes ‘Youare expected to use a random variety of questions, tasks and texts, Keeping the candidate's profilin mind. ‘Youare not expected to use all questions, tasks or ex's, nor to use al of them more than once. ifyou feel that one doesnatwork for you, don'tuseit le 4 PAGE 3/ Guidelines nguage Exam May 2011 ‘Also keep ini ‘+ fbefore orduring the test you have queries or problems, consultwith the Exam Centre Committee. ‘+ _fyouneed to takea break, make sure that youinform the Exam Centre Committee. ‘* SMOKING, the USE OF CELLULAR PHONES and EATING is PROHIBITED inthe examination room. ‘+ NO-ONE SHOULD INTERFERE with your work. No-one is allowed to stand right outside the examination room and disturb you or the candidates. Communicate with candidates in English exclusively. Remember that times limited, so allocate the time foreach activity to each candidate proportionately. ‘+ When the examinationis over, thank the candidates but give no indication as to the quay oftheir performance. ‘+ Make sure that THE CANDIDATES DO NOT LEAVE WITH THE CANDIDATE BOOKLETS, USING THE OFFICIALASSESSMENT FORM Make sure the candidates’ names and code numbers are on their respective forms. Both Evaluators mark the boxesin the columns nbal point pen (biack orblue), ‘The first person to give a mark forthe candidate's performance, Evaluator 1 (the person not conducting the test but sitting silent on the side) fils in the boxes on the leftside column of the Form. The person who gives the second mark the person conducting the test) Evaluator 2 lls in the boxes on the right-side column, after the candidates have lft the room. The overall rating for each candidate -the total mark onthe test is electronically computed, so theres no space provided on the Form for this. ‘© Whenmarking, remember: > the highest possible score for the Oral Testis 20, > 0 (zero) is not only given to candidates who have no competence in English whatsoever orto those who have rot responded. It is also given to candidates who do not perform according to C-level expectations (see ‘Assessment Criteria). Since Evaluators record heir marking separately theirratings may differ. Donat mark te form before you have made your final decision on the mark you willaward. ‘+ Make sure that you know how you will be marking the Assessment Form. Corrections are not permitted on the Form, which should not be wrinkled or damaged in any way. However, ifyou do make a mistake and must correct it take itto the Exam Centre Committee so that hey willhelp you deal withthe problem. ‘+ Fillinthe appropriate boxes for each criterion ike this: Atthe end of the testing day: ‘* RETURN to the Exam Centre Committee the Candidate Booklets, Examiner Packs and the completed Oral Production Evaluation Forms. © DONOT TAKE AWAY FROM THE CENTRE ANY OF THE TEST MATERIALS.
