Self-Reflection Narrative by Deion Green

I feel that I demonstrate Reflective listening well (4:31 in first video). Through listening to the
client and taking thorough notes I have been able to relay back almost exactly what the clients
have stated and ask them if I am correct just to help with clarifying.
Another MI skill I do well is evoking change talk (1:19 in first video). By helping the client
recognize what it is that is the problem and making sure that they are focused on wanting to
change it is important to know this to help them.
I need to improve on my open ended questioning skills and ask questions that are more than just
yes/no but require the client to focus and talk deeply into the issue and about what the problems
are that need to be dealt with in order to address the issue (1:43, 3:36). Some of the questions I
asked
Also, I feel that I need to spend more time in the beginning getting to know the client rather than
just jumping into the permission (0:46) and change talk (1:19).
I feel that I really need work on using more affirmations in interviews to help the client have
more confidence. This could have just been the statement “I appreciate your openness and
honesty about why you are here today”
I really struggle with the summarizing step and advice or directing the client to make a plan for
change. I can do the traditional wrap up “Let’s get this straight”, but I don’t feel that I have been
able to work much on linking things to prior conversations. But I do good at collecting as a
summarizing step.
