Metro College Hires First African-American Women’s Basketball Coach

Lucinda Smart Selected for Metro’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Metropolis, In. (March 30, 2020) –– Lucinda Smart was hired as Metro College’s new
women’s basketball coach today. Smart is the first African-American to coach the women’s
basketball team at Metro College.

The Metro College search committee chose Smart after screening more than 100 people since the
position became vacant when previous coach, Felice Shofar, resigned her position nearly three
months ago.

Lucinda “Cindy” Smart, 30, will be joining Metro College from College of the Hills in
Pennsylvania where she has been assistant basketball coach while earning her Masters degree in
Sports Management. Prior to her role at College of the Hills, Smart played starting center on the
Loyola College women’s basketball team for three years as an undergraduate student.

“We feel fortunate to be able to secure a person who is so highly qualified to lead our
outstanding girls’ basketball team,” said Metro College’s Athletic Director, Luke Hammer. “We
expect great things from Cindy Smart, and we know she’ll deliver the goods.”

For the past 10 years, Metro College’s Division III women’s basketball team has been nationally
ranked and participated in four national tournaments, reaching the semifinals twice and winning
the national title last year.
