Portfolio Project #11

April 14, 2019

1. Name of lesson: Avenger Friendly Letter

2. Grade Level: 4th

3. Group size: This will be an individual assignment

4. Subject: English Language Arts/ Reading: Writing-Composition

5. Standard: (4)5.3 write organized friendly letters, formal letters, thank you letters, and

invitations in an appropriate format for a specific audience and purpose [NS/PS 5.4.2]

6. Objective: The students will understand how to write a friendly letter to their favorite

Avenger to explain why they like them and how they believe their story will end in

Avengers: Endgame.

7. Materials: The materials students will need paper, pencils, pens, and colored markers to

decorate their superhero’s letter (can use stickers of the superhero’s logo if needed).

8. Procedures:

1) To start off the lesson I will project a photo of the Avenger’s cast on the white board for

the entire class to see.

2) This is the perfect age group to do a project based on superheroes and at the right time as

the final movie is about to come out.

3) I will start to excite the students by explaining, “The Avengers are going to be a part of a

lesson I made for you all!”

4) “I know you all have your own favorite Avenger and today you each get to write a letter

and tell them why!”

5) Then, I will begin handing out lined college ruled paper and pencils to each table to give

them all the materials.

6) I will stand at the front of the room at the white board and create my own friendly letter

template to show them how it should be formatted (ex. Heading, greeting, body, closing,

and signature).

7) It is important to me to show the students that I also have a favorite Avenger because it

will excite them to write the letter since I am too.

8) After I write the template on the board, I give all the students time to write to their

superheroes about whatever they choose.

9) Although in case any students are stuck, I offer the direction of writing about why they

love their superhero and what they think will happen at the end of the Endgame film.

10) Once the students are done writing their letters, I pass out Avengers stickers, markers,

and other tools so that the students can decorate their letters to symbolize their Avenger.

9. Assessment: I will use the Formative Learning Assessment. The lesson will be assessed to

see if each student has the required structure of a friendly letter with each part in the right

areas, and also that it meets the minimum two paragraph requirement (5 sentences each). I

will also grade the students on their creativity and effort of the decorations they made on the

letter. As long as they include some kind of drawing or color on the letter they will receive

the points.

Each part of the letter will be 5 points each if they are included. The parts of the letter that

are missing will not earn points. The students will also receive 10 points if they decorate their
letter showing that they put a lot of effort toward creating the assignment. The only other

grades possible for the decoration portion would for 0 points for no colors or pictures or 5

points if their work could have been neater and could have included more.
