WELCOME TO THE WORLD

INTRODUCTION
• The Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and
Literatures is the largest language-teaching unit at
the University of Hawaii. The 14 languages that we
teach are located primarily in the Pacific and in
Southeast Asia, but we also teach Hindi, Sanskrit and
Arabic.
LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
PROGRAMS

• Nowhere in the world are so many Pacific

languages taught as in the Department of
Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures.
Note that not all language programs have
a literature or philology component.
LEARN HINDI & URDU
• Hindi and Urdu are taught under
the Department of Indo-Pacific
Languages and Literatures (IPLL).
Hindi and Urdu are placed perfectly
in the spectrum of languages
taught in IPLL – Sanskrit, Hindi,
Urdu, and Arabic
LEARN SANSKRIT
• Sanskrit is the key to the
civilisational treasures of Hinduism,
Buddhism and Jainism, and
provides direct access to a vast
repository of literary, scientific and
philosophical wisdom. It is the
primary language of classical Indian
art, music, dance, literature and
religion.
LEARN INDONESIAN
• Indonesia is an archipelagic
nation made up of 13,667
islands strung along the
equator between Sumatra in
the west and New Guinea in
the east. Its geographical
vastness makes it one of the
largest countries in the world,
LEARN ARABIC TODAY
• Arabic is the official language of
over 20 countries and is spoken
by over 320 million native
speakers. It is also an official
language of the United Nations,
the Arab League, the
Organization of Islamic
Conference, and the African
Union.
OPEN EDUCATION RESOURCE
• Most IPLL faculty members are actively involved in the
development of high quality multimedia digital teaching
materials. We are happy to share our digitised materials and
offer it freely and openly for educators, students, and self-
learners to use and reuse for teaching, learning, and research
developed.
