ANSWER KEY CLASS 7

1. What will be the time at 40°E and 40°W longitude if it is 4 pm at Greenwich?

40°W 0° 40°E
- +

For 1° of Longitude, the Earth takes 4 mins to rotate.

For 40° of Longitude, the Earth takes 40x4 mins = 160 mins or 160 ÷ 60 =
2 hrs 40 mins to rotate.

So for 40°E Longitude, the time will be 4 pm + 2 hrs 40 mins = 6:40 pm

For 40°W Longitude, the time will be 4 pm - 2 hrs 40 mins = 1:20 pm

2. It is called a Date Line because the date changes when a person crosses this
line. When you cross the line from West to East, you subtract a day, and if
you cross the line from East to West, you add a day.
The IDL passes through several islands in the Pacific Ocean and if it was a
straight line, it would divide the Islands making the dates different on different
sides of the Island creating confusion. So it is a zig-zag line keeping the
Islands on either side of it.
