Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Background
Salim Winding Works is one of the most dominant brands in Pakistan for embroidery threads,
covering every big city of Pakistan with their good reputation and strong network across
Pakistan, operating from 18 different outlets in Pakistan. And with customer base all over the
world such as Sharjah, Bahrain, Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan
In 1975 started as a small family business in a small rented workshop and some second hand
winding and reeling machine. With some degree of success, the enterprise managed to move to
self-owned location not too far from initial location.
In 1980s the company opened second manufacturing facility. The facility brought different
process, such as doubling, twisting and braiding. This is also the start of our venture into sewing
thread market with main focus being cotton sewing thread. In 1990s the company entered into
wet processing with addition of dyeing and mercerization. The company also started producing
embroidery threads, which formed the basis of its future success
In 2003 the company moved to its current facility and started the phase of consolidation and
modernization, with processing equipment being imported from Europe, japan, Korea and china.
Since then we have experienced multiple capacity increment. With firm focus on efficiency and
modernization we are constantly updating our processes we are looking forward for being
dominant player not only in Pakistan but world wide
Currently, having a state-of-the-art production facility with latest machineries and technology.
Facilitating more than 3000+ customers in Pakistan, also in Sharjah, Bahrain, Turkey and Iran
including some of the biggest clothing brands in Pakistan like, “Khaddi, sanasafinaz, MARIA B,
Bonanza and J.”. They always experiment with different technologies, different threads and
different methods. Now they are more focused on working with different sewing threads and
counts, to attract more customers and take more share of the market. And to position themselves
as a complete brand with more variety of shades and all kind of threads.
All the big names of local market is in their customer list, due to good quality, variety of shades
and timely delivery. Operating with a state-of-the-art facility at SINDH INDUSTRIAL
TEXTILE ESTATE.

Most of the sewing threads are demanded by special brands for specific orders, and the quantity
depends upon the order they have, for any special event or any exhibition
Problem Statement:
Volatile demand is one of the major issue faced by the supply chain department of salim winding
works, from last 2 years. And to manage that high volatile demand with the demand of their
regular products in current capacity.
The volatility in the demand of some of the products cause loss of regular products production,
in which some other competitors are also offering the same product, so that volatility actually
becomes the cause of loss of market shares of running products
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research will help the management salim winding works to make any decision regarding
capacity enhancement and to improve the current practice of utilizing the current capacity to
sever maximum demand. The analysis will give an idea of categorizing the volatile products,
according to their variations, which help them to decide either compromising the regular
products or not.
This research will also help to decide before launching any new product having no seasonal
forecasting, and random demand from the market will arrive.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this research is to analyze and monitor the volatility in demand its major
drivers as to understand and access the root cause of volatility. Volatility in demand of different
products, how it affects the regular products, and propose a significant solution of this issue, with
minimum resources enhancement.
Secondly to examine the flaws and issues in the current practice and current decisions through
survey, and after analysis highlight those problems with suitable recommendations.

These questions will help to analyze the issue of volatility and to purpose any solution, regarding
capacity enhancement planning and to fix the flows in process to increase the production for
maximum yield.
