Learning Together in Christ
This is our Mission Statement which emphasises the importance of being a
learning community that lives its life according to the teachings of Christ.
Put in to practice it means that we take Jesus’ injunction to love our neighbour
seriously, we are called to ‘serve and not to be served’ and we strive for
excellence so that we may be better able to contribute to the welfare of
others and ourselves in the wider community. Learning Together in Christ

Dear Parent,

Welcome to St Bernard’s Catholic School. We are committed to the care and success of
every pupil in a way that is rooted in the values of the gospel.

We expect pupils to set themselves high standards in their work, their extra-curricular
activities and their relationships with others. We challenge them to do so and support
them so that they will achieve.

Whilst at St Bernard’s your child will be in the fortunate position of being part of a small
and friendly community with modern classrooms and caring professional staff. We are
determined that St Bernard’s will be second to none in the quality of its curriculum
opportunities, teaching, learning, staff and resources.

We will work with you to develop your child’s gifts, whatever they may be,
so that he or she is well prepared to take a place in the adult world confidently.

If you have any questions about the process of applying for a place, or would like to visit
St Bernard’s, please contact me at the school.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Simpson, Headteacher

encouragement
Every member of our community is recognised as unique, and equally worthy of praise and support. All pupils are set aspirational targets
and are encouraged to reach these through the mentoring and support of subject teachers. Regular meetings with parents and pupils ensure
that this process is supportive as well as challenging.
learning

Learning at St Bernard’s is a journey of discovery and growth which is brought to life with innovative
teaching and imaginative use of resources. Our curriculum is well balanced and includes a range of
academic and vocational courses to suit the needs of every pupil. We aim to have lessons that are
stimulating and interactive, encouraging our pupils to become independent learners.
opportunity
and support
St Bernard’s prides itself on the unique opportunities and support it provides for all pupils.
Our aim is to remove barriers to learning and to enable all pupils to access the whole curriculum.
We are always looking for ways to improve and build on what we have done in the past.
potential Our curriculum is properly balanced: arts, science, aesthetic and practical
subjects are studied throughout so each pupil has the opportunity to
develop his or her potential to the full.

involvement
St Bernard’s promotes a programme of sport for all, whilst also striving for excellence.
Sports Day is an annual highlight with participation and involvement as key features.
Events like tug-of-war, alongside more traditional events allow all pupils to enjoy and take part.
achievement

growth and
Within a Christian environment we believe that all pupils should be encouraged to achieve the maximum according to their
potential. Our Annual Awards Evening celebrates effort, commitment and service, as well as achievement.
In national tests St Bernard’s has made significant progress in the past few years. At Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 results
have been very good and are well above the national average with increasing numbers of pupils achieving higher levels.
A growing confidence with and an ability to use scientific, mathematical and
technological skills are now fundamental requirements if our young people
are to be successful contributors locally and nationally. We aim to invest
substantially to ensure our pupils have the opportunities to meet this challenge.

confidence SPECIALIST SCIENCE COLLEGE

Today’s young people live in an exciting and increasingly scientific and technological world. This is why we have made a
commitment to become a successful Specialist Science College with the aim of trying to develop the potential of all pupils,
so that they are able to become fulfilled and responsible citizens, ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
sixth form
The Sixth Form is a key part of our school community. All students are expected to offer some service to the community, supporting lower school
lessons, assisting within the paired reading scheme or by taking part in some other way to enhance what we can offer to others.

We encourage all students to do the best that is possible. For a majority of our students, this will mean going on to university for the course of their
choice. Whilst we are delighted to have students who take up a university place, all students are valued whatever their destination.
