Essential Question: How can the community support the homelessness crisis?

Three Points to Prove: #1:  Positive impact on lives

#2:  Promote awareness to higher level policy makers
#3: Provide volunteer work to lessen the severity of homelessness

Point that this Source Proves:   #2

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Foscarinis explains that severity of homelessness when she was first exposed to it by stating,
“Many experts believed that more people were homeless than at any time since the Depression,
[ 2] and surveys documented the inability of cities around the country to meet the increasing
demand for emergency shelter.”

Later on, in the article Foscarinis relays the idea that there are people in congress who are
identified with the issue and have said, “Many government agencies are invested in
addressing homelessness. At the federal level, this includes a cadre of career staff. Secretary
Carson has said publicly that homelessness is a solvable problem.[ 74] We also have many
examples of programs, including many funded by the McKinney-Vento Act, that work.”

To end the article Foscarinis suggests a way for policy makers to eliminate the threat of
homelessness by stating, “As advocates working to end homelessness, we can and should draw
on the intersectional nature of our work to link to bigger coalitions both to resist new threats and
to push for positive change.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

These quotes help me to prove my point because she is an established worker in the
National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. All the information she presents in her
article is relevant to today’s issue of homelessness because she presents her occurrences with
homelessness beginning with the presidency of Ronald Reagan. During her time and
experiences, she explains a very interesting point that was made of homelessness and that was
the idea that the issue of homelessness was just a lifestyle that they chose to part take in. This
idea just shows how much knowledge those in congress and policy makers are now making of
the homelessness crisis. She illustrates through her article that there is hope that policy makers
will implement the right acts and laws that will hope to soon finish this problem that not only is
found in certain states but the whole country. She provides certain ways in which these policy
makers can connect this problem to others in a way to try and use one to solve the other one.
