Research Log #4 - Solutionary Project 2020

Date: February 27 2020

Name: Lucinda Hu
Essential Question: What are the negative impacts that invasive species had toward the Hawaii islands.

Three Points to Prove: #1: Leading to native species become endangered

#2: Harm the health of environment and human
#3: Damage the amount of tourism and cause economical loss
Point that this Source Proves: #
Harm the health of environment and human

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

According to Jennifer Klos, an important speaker and visual presenter in the Ted-ED:
“With Sunny fields, a mild climate, and no natural predators in its new home, the vine grow
uncontrollably until it became known as the plant that ate the South.”
“And in Australia, European rabbits eat so many plants that they wiped out the food supply for
themselves and other herbivore.”
“Healthy ecosystems maintain this balance via limiting factors, environmental conditions that restrict the
size or range of species.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This source proves many valuable examples to support the conclusion that the invasive species caused
serious harm to human and to the environment. The example of vine provides under a condition with no
limiting factors, vine quickly spread and almost devour the south as provided with quote “With Sunny
fields, a mild climate, and no natural predators in its new home, the vine grow uncontrollably until it
became known as the plant that ate the South.”(Klos 2016)Another example of European rabbits provide
how invasive species could deplete all the natural resources that are previously existed in a balanced
environment.
In addition, this resource provides specific explanation about the reason that the invasive species could
cause the harm. According to Jennifer Klos, “healthy ecosystems maintain this balance via limiting
factors, environmental conditions that restrict the size or range of species.”(Klos 2016)The insight that
this resource provides is that the invasive species tend to be facing difficult environment, predators, and
other limiting factors during the original habitat as a result of millions of years of evolution. However,
when they came to a new environment with no limiting factor, they can easily grow rapidly in the new
place and eventually threaten the life of native species and human.

Research log #4

I started the interview schedule for the last two reading logs about interviewing the professionals

in the field with prepared questions. I decide the first professional I will be interview is the Oahu

Invasive Species Committee, a voluntary partnership organization of state, federal, and private

agency. I already wrote an email to them and received feedback about they are glad to set an

interview with me in their base at Kailua and asked me the time that I am available to interview.

However, they haven’t responded back yet since I send my schedule yesterday. I choose to

interview OISC is because of its profound knowledge and close connection with the invasive

species, especially in the Oahu islands.

In the second interview, I decided to ask the Hawaii Invasive Species Council. This is an inter-

departmental collaboration that includes the Department of Land and Natural Resources,

Agriculture, Health, Transportation, Business, Economic Development & Tourism, and the

University of Hawaii. I decide to interview someone in this organization is because of the

connection of its mission with my topic. Hawaii Invasive Species Council also focused on the

control and eradication of harmful invasive species and prevent other invasive species from

entering the state. I haven’t sent an email to the Hawaii Invasive Species Council yet, but I

decide to do so by this week.

My research in the solutionary project is also ongoing. I find a website with an explanation of 10

ways that people can help prevent the spread of invasive species. Those advices include cleaning

hiking boots and fishing gear, fishing using native baits, report invasive species and plant native

species. Those are some strategies that I can write in my research paper as well as my posters

about public education.
