MODULE 1: PARAPHRASING - (For Total Beginners)

SHEET 1

Hi, Welcome to Engage Community! We’re glad you’re here…

My name is Robert Rosana, and I am going to take you through this first lesson in this brief
course. This is our first trainer sheet. Before we go any further, we want to understand what
Paraphrasing is.

JUST BEFORE WE MAKE OUR HANDS DIRTY

NOTE:

I want to be very specific in this. We are training you to write – more specifically, to SOLVE
PROBLEMS! We are not training you to propagate laziness! We train you to think critically
to solve problems in society. The problems can range from clients who want to understand some
concepts in research, and they may need your consultancy as an EXPERT. Therefore, it will do
you good after this training to align your writing expertise into your area of profession. For
example, you can become a writing expert in Accounting, Business, IT, or Nursing. All over the
world, there are many people who are doing research, or they want to understand something, or
they want some content to publish on their websites or blogs; all these clients will need your
services.

To paraphrase is to use the information or ideas of someone else and to make them your own by
rephrasing their ideas in your own words. The secret towards succeeding in paraphrasing is to

limit the words that you use from the original content (OC) – Be mindful to CITE your
paraphrase. Now that you are here, you don’t need to get worried. I will show you how to proper
citation.

NOTE: Failure to cite paraphrased content (PC) can be construed as PLAGIARISM!

At Engage, we prefer doing it the practical way. In this module, we are going to cover
paraphrasing and Citation. I am going to show you how to do it, practically. We are going to
choose a topic for which to practice on. Let’s say our client needs is doing research on “The
economic effects of vaping in the US.” As a writing expert, you know where to begin –
Definitions. We want the client to have a clear understanding of what vaping is. Well, let's make
our hands dirty.

NOTE: For this training, there are some terms and phrases that you need to familiarize
with. The first one is Original Content. Which throughout this training, we will be referring to as
OC. The Second phrase is Paraphrased Content, which we will be referring to as PC.

Here, I have randomly picked a source from the internet addressing vaping. Our goal is to define
vaping. Have a look at how I have paraphrased this OC to make my PC.

Topic: Vaping in the US

vaping

Original Content (OC) - Content 1 (Without Quotes)

What is Vaping?

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is

produced by an e-cigarette or similar device. The term is used because e-cigarettes do not produce

tobacco smoke, but rather an aerosol, often mistaken for water vapor, that actually consists of fine

particles. Many of these particles contain varying amounts of toxic chemicals, which have been linked to

cancer, as well as respiratory and heart disease.

Paraphrased Content (PC) - (Without Citation)

Vaping involves inhaling and exhaling dangerous chemicals known as aerosols from electronic

cigarettes or similar devices. E-cigarettes are different from normal cigarettes because they do not

produce tobacco smoke, but an aerosol which looks like water vapor containing fine particles. Most of the

particles have varying contents of dangerous chemicals that have been associated with cancer, respiratory

diseases, and heart ailments.

NOTES

Writing is simple! First, work to own content. From the example above, I have re-written the

same content but using my own words. However, I DID NOT change the meaning. Well, it does not

mean that I am not creative; it’s just a way of showing you how to PARAPHRASE content – stick to the

content unless thinking otherwise will favor you.

This is your first lesson in this course. For more insight on what is paraphrasing, READ ‘P1Sheet

1’ (Attached in this mail).

NOTE: For you to proceed, you MUST have shown exemplary paraphrasing skills.

NOTE: Avoid the Chicken mentality!! Own Content – Make it your Own!

YOUR TURN!

TASK!!
[ENGAGE ONLINE WRITERS TRAINERS] April 28, 2020

Now paraphrase Content 1 the OC (Original Content) in your own words OR visit the internet

and GOOGLE out another definition of vaping (Make sure it as comprehensive enough – at least not less

than 65 words). However, you may want to do more; it is highly recommended. So, I won’t mind if you

do 200 words!

Assume that the client wanted the definition of vaping. The Original Content is what you get

from the internet. Don’t limit yourself. You can still GOOGLE for more OC and produce your own PC.

When you are done, MAIL your PC to engagetrainers@gmail.com . Kindly indicate your Email subject

as PC1. We will assess your PC and rate it.

IMPORTANT: In your PC, you MUST include the link to the OS that you worked with. We will

assess your PC against the OS. Don’t bother to cite for now, we will do this in the next module –

MODULE 2.

For any Queries, reach out to the mail using QUERY as the email subject.

Thank you. See you in the next Module.
