Hi,

we need to get from Cusco to Huanuco next month. Does anyone have any advice about routes we could
take, good bus/airline companies and an idea of costs? We are not restricted by time but don't want to
spend too much and also want to be safe! Thanks :)

Is better go in some airline because in bus is too annoying, believe me. Browse the website of airline
because sometimes there are nice oferts. If you need protect more your budget and are adventurous go in
bus.

From Cusco to Huanuco? Wow how much time do you have? You can get there by bus, but you will need to
stop along the way. Route would be Cuzco>Abancay>Ayacucho>Huancayo>La Orya>Cerro de
Pasco>Huanuco. Huancalavica and Tarma are great to visit but o your main path. I don't know if the big
bus companies go between Cuzco and Ayacucho, but they do between Ayacucho and La Orya. From there
you might be back on small busses or small bus lines. If you fly, you would be flying through Lima, obviously.
What you want to do is a fantastic trip, but I think you need to be very interested in the journey, not the
destination, especially since your final destination is sort of an odd one.

The easiest option is to fly (via Lima), the most unadventurous option overland is by bus to Lima and then
bus to Huanuco, but if you're seeking a bit more adventure (as you say that you're not restricted to time)
then the three routes below are all worth considering.

Travelling through the spine of the Andes ‐ The route through the spine of the Andes is a fantastic trip
and one that I would happily travel again ‐ it's certainly not 'annoying' as the first post states. You'll get to
witness wonderful scenery, a sense of adventure, remote Andean towns / pueblos, typical markets and
welcoming hospitality. A route that I took a few years ago was Cusco ‐ Abancay ‐ Andahuaylas ‐ Chincheros
‐ Ocros ‐ Ayacucho ‐ Julcamarca ‐ Lircay ‐ Huancavelica ‐ Huancayo (by train) ‐ Jauja ‐ Tarma ‐ Cerro de
Pasco ‐ Huanuco.

Travelling via the Amazon ‐ Another option, and a route that you may not have considered, is to travel
mostly by boat via the Amazon region; Cusco ‐ Quillabamba ‐ Kiteni ‐ Ivochote ‐ Camisea ‐ Sepahua ‐ Atalaya
‐ Pucallpa ‐ Huanuco. I took this route a couple of years ago and it was surprisingly straight forward and
stress free. Assuming that you'll be visiting Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu, then instead of back‐tracking
to Cusco, continue instead to the pleasant town of Quillabamba for a night or two. From Quillabamba you
can make it to Ivochote travelling via Kiteni. You would then need to spend the night in Ivochote before
catching a small boat down river through the Pongo de Maniqui (google images) to Camisea for a night.
The next day you would take another small boat down river to the nicer town of Sepahua. From here you'll
find boats down river to the larger town of Atalaya and from Atalaya on to the small city of Pucallpa (or
from Atalaya there is road transport inland to Puerto Ocopa, Satipo, Chanchamayo, Tarma and beyond). In
Pucallpa buses and combis run across the day to Tingo Maria and Huanuco. The boat journeys between all
these destinations are completed within a day.

An alternative and more o the beaten track route beyond Quillabamba

Quillabamba ‐ Kiteni ‐ Kepashiato ‐ San Francisco ‐ Pichari ‐ Puerto Ocopa ‐ Satipo ‐ Chanchamayo ‐ Tarma ‐
Huanuco. Another option from Quillabamba is to travel a more o the beaten track route. From
Quillabamba you would need to head to Kepashiato (via Kiteni) for a night and then take a camianeta
(Toyota Hylux)to San Francisco the following morning ‐ this is a great section of rugged unpaved road.
Once in San Francisco hourly transport runs up to Ayacucho and beyond, or you could head 30 minutes
north to the larger town of Pichari. From just outside Pichari you will find small boats plying the Rio
Apurimac which depart daily at around 6am to Puerto Ocopa. On arrival in the pocket sized pueblo of
Puerto Ocopa you'll find colectivo's ready and waiting for the small town of Mazamari and Satipo. From
Satipo frequent transport plies the Pichanaki ‐ Chanchamayo ‐ Tarma route, and then on to Huanuco.
