2.7 The student will
a) count and compare a collection of pennies,
nickels, dimes, and quarters whose total value is
$2.00 or less; and
b) use the cent symbol, dollar symbol, and decimal
point to write a value of money.
The purpose of this lessons is to be able to have the students
correctly identify the difference in money. Students should
be able to tell the difference in the amounts of a dollar, a
quarter, a dime, a nickel and a penny. Students should also
be able to place a dollar symbol, cent symbol, and decimal
in the correct place to be able to write the value of money.
The smart exchange lesson would be used as a group
review at the end of the lesson. The lesson would begin by
placing individual bags on each student’s desk. Each bag
would have a different amount value in each ranging from
thirty-one cents to two dollars. Each student would count
the total amount of money in the bag and write the amount
on the board separately without the dollar symbol, cent
symbol, or decimal. The student’s would then raise their
hands and go to a different amount on the board from the
total amount that was inside their bag and place either the
correct dollar symbol, cent symbol, and decimal point in the
correct place it needed to be. After counting and writing the
correct amounts of money and the symbols and decimals on
the board, the whole class would get together as a group
and go over the smart exchange review lesson as a group. I
would have the students sit on the carpet and at random
draw names I have written with popsicle sticks to come up
and answer the blanks on the board from the inter active
activity throughout the lesson.
