Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

I will start the timer for 10 minutes for MicroType. When you hear the bell this means that you need to

complete your tab and be prepared to listen to the directions. I should not hear any clicking of the keyboards.

Be respectful and I will give you time to finish your work.

This week we are going to Spring Forward into Formatting. Raise your hand if you know what formatting

means? How does formatting apply to Microsoft word? Why would you need to use different formatting

techniques?

Higher Order Thinking (HOT) Questions:

- How will formatting apply to a job?

- What formatting tabs can you name?

Content to be presented in lesson:

I will start the timer for 10 minutes for MicroType. When you hear the bell this means that you need to stop

and complete your tab and be prepared to listen to the directions. I should not hear any clicking of the

means? How does formatting apply to Microsoft word? Why would you need to use different formatting

techniques?

I will be passing out a pre-assessment. There needs to be silence whenever we are taking this test. This will

not be for a grade but the one on Friday will be. Do your best. When you are completed, turn it in to the

basket. Be respectful till everyone is done.

Learning activities/procedures:

● Bellringer: 10 minute MicroType

● Introduction to Formatting

● Closure: What did I leave with?

Summary/Closure/Review of Content:

Today we were introduced to formatting on Microsoft Word. I want you to set a goal for yourself this week for

how you want to act in this class and what you want to accomplish. When you are done turn it into the pink

basket. Tomorrow we will start our first assignment over formatting. Have a great day!

Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

The purpose of the assessments is to gradually introduce the new techniques. Today’s pre-assessment will

create data for my ILPPA. It will let me see how effective my teaching is and what parts will need to improve.

The screen labeling will help students locate object functions. This will be helpful for their following

assignment to practice formatting techniques on a word document. I will use the exit slips to monitor their
KeyCode March 9-13
progress throughout the week to see if they can identify which parts of Word that they can apply to different

areas of their life.

Modifications for exceptional learners:

IEP 504

- Provide extra time to finish assignments - Reduce workload

- Paper copy with highlighted parts - Provide extra time

- Work on MT

Extra time:

- Work at home ELL

- Morning - Modify assignment with less work to

- Afternoon understand the concepts

- Work it Wednesday: Advisory - MT Alphabet

- Lunch Corral if necessary

Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Before they start the quizizz and Google classroom notes the students will open their microtype program and

work on this for 10 min.

Open your micro type and I will start the timer for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes I will have someone ring
KeyCode March 9-13
the bell. I will need you to find a stopping point and open a blank document on Microsoft Word.

Today we will be learning how to use simple formatting in a word document. Who can give me their best

guess to what simple formatting means? What does this look like? (15 second wait time)

- Have numbers ready to call out some names to learn them

Let’s start off opening quizizz. Everyone go to this website joinmyquizzizz.com and enter the code I

have written on the board to access the activity. I want you to have fun with this! This is just for me to

see how much you know! We are going to split up into teams and begin the game! Good luck!

Higher Order Thinking (HOT) Questions:

- Do you remember what formatting means?

- What is a ribbon?

- Which tab do you use to insert shapes?

For us to understand the importance of each formatting feature we need to know what program we are using.

Let’s open up Microsoft Word and open a blank document. How many tabs do you see? What is the purpose

of a tab?

The tabs that we see are File, Home, Insert, Design, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review, and View.

These tabs allow you to make your document different. We are going to focus on the Home tab. This is where

the most basic functions are. Take a look at the bottom part of the tab where is says clipboard. Most of the

time these functions will be organized by using Icons or pictures to represent their job. If you use your cursor

and hover over the object you can see that it will show a tiny box that tells you what it does. This works for

all tabs on Microsoft Office. What I want you to do is follow along while I explain the instructions for your

assignment. Your goal today is to label the screen with its functions. So if you see this icon (scissors) I need

you to label it Cut. If there are two pieces of paper what is the name of this formatting technique? Yes it is a

copy.

Your assignment is on google classroom. You will need to match the letters with the numbers. You are in

charge of saving your work. Label the parts and we will finish it tomorrow at the end of the class. I’ll give

your 10 minutes to work and then you can ask me questions. You may begin!

Take a look at the board to see the layout of MW. What are some tabs you can name? In this assignment you
will look for the names and icons of a format. We will then discuss what each of their functions will do. Let’s
do the first one together.

We will need to match the number with the letter that we see. For part one there are 19 questions that you will
need to match with letters A-S. The first one is Blank Document. Which letter corresponds to this answer?
KeyCode March 9-13
This needs to be completed by tomorrow. When you are done turn it in on Google Classroom.

Learning activities/procedures:

● Bellringer: 10 minute MicroType

● Quizizz of Formatting

● Microsoft Word: Labeling

● Closure: Microsoft Office or Google Docs

Summary/Closure/Review of Content:

How do you tell the differences between Microsoft Word and Google Documents? You need to be able to

identify both programs because a big difference is that they have the ability to “Save” automatically. We

worked on labeling Word to understand what icons went with which name. This is important to do because you

need to understand a program before you use it. This will make you save your time and effort by understanding

and utilizing each function that is available.

Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

The purpose of the assessments is to gradually introduce the new techniques. The screen labeling will help

Summary/Closure/Review of Content:

What did we learn this week? How can you apply it? Formatting will be a part of your life when you are

creating work for any job. The tabs on word will help you to create letters, posters, and PowerPoint’s. Use these

tools to make your work unique and memorable. Utilize the tools that are on a program and this will help you

create documents that are professional and unique.

Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

The purpose of the assessments is to wrap the week up to understand if the students understood the techniques

learned throughout the week. The screen labeling will help students locate object functions. The formatting

assignment gives students the ability to apply their knowledge to documents. Using exit slips for each day

shows me their engagement for the day and see which parts of my teaching were effective and ineffective.
