Simple Past
Today I had a bad day at work. I was late because I missed the bus. I
missed an important meeting and my boss was mad. I also forgot to bring
an important report because I brought the wrong briefcase. On my way
to my boss’s office I got a coffee. Then I spilled the coffee on my shirt
by mistake. In his office I tripped on a phone cord and fell. He was very
angry about the report. Later I told my co-workers that the boss was in a
bad mood. I did an impression of the boss and made fun of him. When
I turned around the boss was behind me. He heard everything. He
called me into his office and he fired me. On my way home I went to my
favourite deli for a salami sandwich. But they had no more salami! It was
the worst day of my life.

Today I went to the park with my mom and our dog. We went
down the slide. My mom pushed me on the swing. We also
found a small pond. The dog and I splashed around in the
pond. Then we played tag. Mom brought a picnic lunch. We
sat on the grass and ate sandwiches. The dog chased squirrels.
Afterwards, mom bought me an ice-cream cone! Then I saw
my friends Alex and Jenny. We all played frisbee together. Then
I felt tired, so we went home.

Fred picked Sarah up from her house in the afternoon. First they
went to the art gallery. They both liked the Picasso paintings
best. Then they walked in the park and held hands. In the
evening they went to a Japanese restaurant. Fred ordered
sushi and Sarah ordered teriyaki. Afterwards they took another
walk downtown. Fred gave Sarah his jacket because she
was cold. They saw a quiet café and went inside. They both
ordered coffee and shared a piece of chocolate cake. Then
Fred drove Sarah home. They both enjoyed the evening.

Yesterday I gave a speech in front of my class. I was very nervous and
I was sweating a lot. Everyone was bored, even my teacher. She was
yawning and watching the soccer game out the window. Some people
were sleeping on their desks. One guy was even snoring. Other people
said it was very good. My teacher gave me a good mark but she told
me to speak slower.

My husband also wants to go camping, but I’ve already gone camping twice
this year. He grew up in the city and has never spent much time in the woods.
I grew up in the country and have gone camping every year since I was 12
years old. I want to go somewhere I’ve never been before. We both want
to go on a cruise. My husband has been on a cruise before. He went to the
Caribbean. He had a good time but we want to go somewhere unusual.
Neither of us has been to Alaska so we thought of taking a cruise in Glacier Bay.
That is definitely an unusual vacation and there are so many unusual things
to see. I have never seen whales before and my husband has never seen
icebergs. We have never hiked along glaciers. We have both decided that an
Alaskan cruise is the best idea for our vacation.

found a job teaching Japanese, and she likes it a lot. She’s also seen a lot
of places and done a lot of things in Montreal. For example, Yuko has been
to Mount Royal, she has ridden on the Metro, she’s eaten a Montreal bagel,
and she’s met a cute Montreal man. She’s also learned a lot of French and
improved her English. She has made a lot of friends too. Some of her friends
are from Montreal but some of them have recently moved to Montreal just
like Yuko. She has been to many bars and clubs on St. Laurent Street. She has

Peter’s Party
Peter has been cooking in the kitchen for 4 hours. He and his wife are
having guests over for dinner tonight. He has been working hard to
prepare the meal. He has prepared an appetizer, a main course, some
salad and now he is making the dessert. He is making a cake for dessert,
and he has been mixing the ingredients for 10 minutes. Now he just has
to bake it for an hour.
His wife has been cleaning for several hours as well. She has cleaned the
bathrooms, the living room, and the front hallway. Now she’s cleaning
the dining room. She has been dusting the furniture for almost twenty
minutes now. When Peter finishes cooking, she’s going to help him clean
the kitchen.
They have been planning this dinner party all week but they left all the
work until the last minute. They have been working so hard that they are
exhausted now. They are both very tired, and would rather sleep tonight
than have guests over.

Yesterday my boss was angry with me. She said that I had forgotten to
write the finance report. I reminded her that we had agreed to finish

because last week I was in San Francisco on business, and I had fallen
behind in my work. Apparently, she had forgotten that conversation.
Usually my boss is quite understanding. Maybe she had had a bad week.

The Audition
Last Saturday there was an audition for a play. Bill had spent the previous
two weeks preparing for the audition. He had read the entire play and
had memorized all his lines. He had booked the audition day off work.
He had even learned to speak with a British accent because it was a
Shakespearean play. He had practiced his lines in front of his girlfriend,
his parents, even in front of his dog. He had really hoped to impress the
directors. He had bought a new shirt to wear the day of the audition.
Unfortunately, that day Bill woke up with a terrible fever. He couldn’t
even get out of bed he felt so sick. Bill was so upset about missing the
audition because he had invested so much time and effort into it.

Past Perfect Continuous
My Pen Pal
Last week I finally met my pen pal in person. We had been writing to
each other for two years, but had never met. We had been hoping to
meet but it was difficult as she is from England and I live in Canada. We
are both synchronized swimmers. She had been trying to convince her
team to travel to Canada for some small swimming competitions but it
was too expensive. Finally her team decided to come to Canada for a
big international competition. Up until last week I had been recovering
from an ankle injury but luckily I am fully recovered now. We are both
excited about the competition and spending some time together.

Past Perfect Continuous
John’s rock band just broke up. They had been playing together for
three years, but they hadn’t been getting anywhere. They had been
performing lots of shows, but the clubs were usually empty. They had
been publicizing their shows by putting up posters, but no one seemed to
read them. They had been writing lots of new songs, but no one wanted
to buy their music. For the last year or so, all the musicians had been
experimenting with other music groups. The guitarist had been jamming
with a Jazz group on the weekends, the drummer had been drumming
for a punk band, and John had been rapping for a hip-hop group.
That’s why they decided to split up.

A Concert After All
by Adele
I was really disappointed when my
boss said I had to work on
Saturday. There was a rock concert
I really wanted to go to. I think
Ernesto knew how bummed I was.
He changed the schedule at the
last minute. I didn't know how to
thank Pete for taking my shift!
(Pete is a waiter I work with.) I
decided to buy Pete a T-shirt at the
show. He laughed when I brought
him his gift. It was way too small
and he doesn’t like the Bleacher
Boyz. I told him to give his present
to his girlfriend. She's petite like
me. Usually concert T-shirts are
enormous, but the large ones
were all sold out. The best part about the concert was when the singer unplugged his guitar. I like acoustic
music better than electric music. I will have to work some extra shifts to pay my mom back for my ticket.
Maybe Pete will let me work for him next weekend. Thank you to Ernesto, Pete, and Mom for making my
dream come true. The Bleacher Boyz rocked!

One day some guys in his class asked if he wanted to join their rock band,
because they knew Peter played guitar. He told them he didn’t have enough
time, but really he was thinking, “if only I played guitar better, I could be in a
band.” On his way home, Catherine, asked if he wanted to go to the school
dance with her. Peter lied, saying, he had to work that night. Peter was really
thinking to himself, “If only I knew how to dance, I could go with Catherine.” It
seems that Peter often avoids trying new things. If Peter didn’t doubt himself so
much, he would have a lot more fun.

Lost - Part 1
Jamie is lost in the woods. He left his hiking group to explore on his own. Now he
realizes that he shouldn’t have separated from the hiking group. He should have
listened to the hiking leader. He also should have brought a trail map with him.
Most importantly, he shouldn’t have left all his food supplies in his wife’s backpack.
Furthermore, he probably shouldn’t have been listening to music while the hiking
leader explained wilderness survival skills. As it starts to get dark Jamie realizes that he
should have built a shelter. He should have gathered branches for his shelter while
there was still daylight. He also shouldn’t have forgotten his flashlight at home. If he
can just make it back to camp tomorrow he won’t ever be so foolish again.

Lost - Part 3
Three days after being lost in the wilderness Jamie finally makes it back to camp.
He is reunited with his hiking group and his wife. They are all happy and relieved to
see him. Jamie is relieved to be alive. He could have starved to death in the forest.
Jamie didn’t have a map and he could have wandered further into the forest instead
of finding his way back. He could have even frozen to death or been attacked by
wild animals. He could have fallen and hurt himself and never made it back.

Last month John’s car was stolen in Toronto. The front window was
smashed by the thief, and the car was driven out of the city. It was
kept in an abandoned lot for a week. Finally the window was repaired
and it was sold on the black market to a used car dealership. Soon, it
was bought by a young man who drove it out west to visit his family. In
Alberta the young man was pulled over for speeding. The car was seized
by police because the license plate indicated it was stolen. Finally the
car was returned to John. He couldn’t believe all the crazy things that
had happened to his car.

The Tornado
Last month, the Johnson’s house was destroyed by a tornado. The roof
was ripped off during the storm. The car was picked up by strong winds
and dropped 2 miles from the house. Most of their possessions were lost
in the storm. The Johnsons were housed and fed during the ordeal by
family and friends. Luckily the Johnson’s house was insured. Now the
house is being renovated. The walls are being repaired, the roof is being
rebuilt, and all of the rooms are being painted. The entire house is being
refurnished. A lot of money is being spent to repair the house, but at
least the family wasn’t killed by the storm.

Janie hated school. She was bullied by the other kids in her class. She
was made fun of, she was taunted and she was laughed at. She was
often yelled at by her teacher. Janie’s parents were worried about her,
so they moved her to a new school. On her first day at the new school
she was welcomed by the entire class. She was shown around the school
by a nice girl named Samantha. She was even given a desk in the front
row. In art class, she was complimented by the teacher on her beautiful
drawing. At recess she was invited by a group of kids to play baseball.
Janie is respected at her new school and she is much happier.
