Assignment: Module 4

Title of Program: Take a </br> with Coding

The group that is being selected for the Take a </br> with Coding program is the

Hispanic students at the local public high school. This group of students are widely

underrepresented in the technology sector of the work industry and the digital gap among our

students is growing. By having the Take a </br> with Coding program, the Hispanic students will

begin learning the basic functions and techniques for coding. This program will begin to

decrease the digital divide among our students and put them on the same level as their fellow

peers when attending university or technical college. The coding program will be open to

Hispanic students in all grade levels within the high school and will provide the technology

training needed for coding.

The Take a </br> with Coding program will be provided at the local high school,

occurring a few days after school in the school’s library or computer lab. The school librarian

will organize the coding program with the Digital Learning Coach to provide the necessary skills

to learning the basic steps in the coding.

There are many things I want to accomplish with the Take a </br> with Coding program.

The first thing I hope to accomplish with the coding program is providing a safe environment for

Hispanic students who have been attending the high school since day one and for any

Newcomer students who may not know many peers within the school building. Many high

school students stay within their social groups and struggle with bringing in new students who

may not have a group to socialize with. The idea of a safe environment means all are welcome

within the coding club, there are no judgements when beginning the coding activities, we will

help one another when attempting the lessons, and we will include all when working as a team.

The second thing I hope to accomplish with this program is closing the digital divide within the

technology industry. There is a large gap between underprivileged groups in our community

and the middle-class sector. The coding program will bring attention to need for more

technology programs for our underprivileged student groups within our public schools. As a

public-school librarian, it is important to be an advocate for your students and to seek out

programs that our students are wanting and needing. By having the coding program available

after school in the library or computer lab, students will have easy access for attending and can

inviting peers to join them. The third thing I hope to accomplish with this program is building a

coding/technology community within our school. The coding program will start as an after-

school program within the library. After a few months of offering the coding lessons to the

Hispanic group in our high school, I would like to begin offering the coding lessons during class

lessons. By integrating different curriculum standards in the coding lessons, teachers will be

more willing to integrate the library lessons into their weekly schedules. When offered during

the school day, I hope this will begin to reach for Hispanic students and possibly other student

groups that are a part of the digital divide.

There are a wide variety of options when it comes to advertising for the Take a </br>

with Coding program. The first way of advertising is through the teacher’s school newsletter.

The librarian first needs to get the teachers informed and aware of the new program that will

offered to our Hispanic group population and explaining the benefits and outcomes of the

coding program. The second way of advertising for the coding program is having multiple

bulletin boards throughout the school and library. It is important to provide visual

representations about the program, how it will be benefit our student groups, and who is able

to attend the coding program. Since the coding program is being providing in a school library

setting, the librarian can also advertise the program through the school’s morning

announcements and parent communication letters. By showing your excitement about the

program on the announcement, students will become interested in what the program has to

offer. It will be important to explain how the coding program will provide a great way to meet

new people from their school and how the skills learned within the coding program will transfer

into college courses. Lastly, I would advertise the coding program with the public library where

many of the high school students study and hang out with friends. This will create a partnership

with local public library.

The type of library that will be offer the Take a </br> with Coding program is a public,

high school with a Hispanic population that are struggling with the digital divide and are

needing technology courses to help prepare the Hispanic group for college courses.

The first partner organization that will secure the success of the program is Hour of

Code. This organization provides free online coding lessons that are geared to different age

ranges. Students attending the coding program can have differentiated coding lessons provided

by this online organization. Each lesson is geared to one hour of coding where students are

starting off with basic coding skills and working their way to more advanced lessons. The

second partner organization is Code Advantage. This is another organization that provides

students with online coding lessons that are targeted to each student’s needs. The third

organization that will help in securing the success of the program is the local Chamber of

Commerce. By working with the Chamber of Commerce, they will be able to find partnerships

with coding businesses within the community who can provided insight and lessons for our

students in the coding program. It is important for our Hispanic students to see individuals in

the community who are successful in the coding industry. All of these organizations will

increase our students understanding of coding and the benefits of working in the technology

field.
