I completed three online activities to fulfill my professional development hours. The first
activity was a self-paced class offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses
(AACN) on the topic of caring for patients with respiratory illnesses. This activity consisted of
several didactic modules, interactive case studies, and quizzes about acute respiratory distress
syndrome (ARDS) which is currently a prominent health issue due to the pandemic. The class
reviewed concepts such as ARDS pathophysiology, oxygen delivery systems, and mechanical
ventilation which are essential to be familiar with when dealing with critically ill patients.
Additionally, I participated in two self-paced online classes offered by the World Health
Organization (WHO) about infection control and prevention and severe acute respiratory
infection. These classes fully consisted of modules that contained PowerPoint presentations on
each section.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
Due to social distancing measures in place, each activity was completed online from
home. The AACN class took four hours from start to finish while the WHO classes took me two
I chose to participate in activities that would be the most beneficial to my upcoming role
as a nurse in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each activity targeted some
aspect of preventing the spread of the illness or caring for those who are suffering from it. I
especially valued the AACN class because it was highly interactive and simulated the clinical
environment. I felt refreshed when revisiting pathophysiology related to the pulmonary system
and mechanisms of caring for patients with ARDS because it is extremely applicable to the
How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
Throughout my nursing career I will be utilizing the skills that I learned from each of the
three classes. As a nurse, I will be committed to continuously learning new skills and concepts
while reviewing those that I have learned in the past. By participating in similar courses during
I believe that offering self-paced online activities are beneficial to students that are self-
motivated to learn and self-disciplined enough to fully invest in the learning opportunity.
Therefore, future semesters should be given the opportunity to participate in these activities, but
they should be in conjunction with in-person events if possible. I am truly appreciative of what I
have gained from these activities and I am eager to apply what I have learned to my future
practice.
