Government Buildings of

Dubuque
Claire

We are studying three buildings called the Courthouse, City Hall

and the Old Jail. All three of them are really cool buildings.
Now I am going to talk about the three buildings. First, I am going
to talk about the Courthouse. The Courthouse was built in 1839. The
Courthouse had seven statues and on top of the gold dome there is a
statue called Lady Justice. This building was chosen to be listed under
the National Register of Historical Places.
Next, I am going to talk about the City Hall. The City Hall was the
first government home in Dubuque. This building was built in 1845.
There was a bell tower added later that year. The building was
remodeled and a market was added. The floor became offices for city
officials.
Last but not least, the Old Jail. The Old Jail was built in 1857-58.
Six new cells were added for juveniles and women. The Jail closed its
doors to all inmates, in 1969. The Old Jail also became a Historic
Landmark.
Those are the three buildings that we studied. I hope you learned
something about these three buildings.
