Physics Assignment no.

01 Date 28/01/2020
Interference, Diffraction, Polarization

Q1) a) Derive an expression for path difference for interference due to thin film. Derive [6M]
the conditions of maxima and minima.
b) State and explain Rayleigh’s criterion with the help of necessary diagram. [5M
Calculate the aperture of the objective of a telescope which may be used to
resolve two stars separated by 3*10-6 radians for light of wavelength 6000A0.
c) State law of Malus. How should the Polarizer and Analyzer be oriented to [4M
reduce intensity of beam to (i) 25% (ii) 50% (iii) 75% of its original intensity?

Q2) a) Explain Huygen’s Wave Theory of Double Refraction. [6M]

b) Define Grating. Starting from the equation of resultant intensity obtain the [5M]
conditions of Principal maxima and minima for grating.

c) Interference fringes are produced with monochromatic light falling normally on [4M]
a wedge shaped film of refractive index 1.50. The angle of wedge is 10 seconds
of an arc and the distance between successive fringes is 0.6 cm. What is the
wavelength of light used?
