Unit1- Critical Refection

Raciolinguistic Ideology examines how language is used to construct race and how ideas of race

influence language. This is often used for racial categorization and is often the root for much of

the linguistic stereotypes. Take myself for example, as someone who comes from an extremely

small island that is nearly unheard of by Americans, despite introducing myself in generally

proper English it continues to baffle others as to how I speak such proper English. Thus,

continuing the stereotype that “island people” from the Caribbean don’t speak English and the

island who do don’t speak it well.

Translanguaging is when bilingual speakers use their languages as an integrated communication

system. As a bilingual speaker myself I can surely see how this concept helps as it helps in

understanding one another better and strengthening my own language as well. For example, my

family is all primarily French and English speakers, however some of us speak languages outside

of those two such as Spanish, German, Chinese and sign language but when we are all together,

we speak mainly English. Seeing that both French and English is nearly tied for our primary

language we speak often try to repeat ourselves in the other language thus strengthening them

both.
Afroladinidad is a collective cultural identity of Latina/Latino who are full or partial descendants

of Africans. This is an important because while they celebrate the cultural similarities among

African Latinos there is also the occasional miss understanding between the two cultures.

Africans or people of fuller African ancestry often mistake them for Latino/Latinas and vis versa.
