CHART WRITING SAMPLE

The graphs below show the amount of money spent on protecting crops and
how crops are damaged in three different regions of the world in 2005.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and

The graphs present statistical data on three continents’ expenditure on crop

preservation and damage in the year of 2005.

Overall, it is noteworthy that while African and Australian countries’ spending on

protecting plants rose over the months, that of European ones fell substantially.
Also, the two graphs seem to suggest a link between investments into crop
protection and the extent of damage in the three regions.

A more detailed look at the first chart reveals that there was a $200 million
crop preserving spending in Europe and Australia each during the first half of the
However, the next three months witnessed practical growth in the latter
figure, overtaking the former and maintained its upward trend to reach a peak of
$1 billion at the end of the year. Numbers for Africa investments, meanwhile,
consistently and ended up at well under $400 million in the last quarter.

Interestingly, contradiction appears when combining the two charts. Australia,

though being the dominant donor in crop protection of the three continents with
roughly $2.5 billion, suffered from the most damage of somewhere in the vicinity
of 1.5 thousand hectares of land. Regarding Europe and Africa, the area of
ravaged land throughout 2005 in each was around 1.4 thousand hectares,
although the former’s funding in preserving plants was twice as much as the
latter’s, to cite the figures at about $2.4 billion and $1.2 billion respectively.
