Comparative Adjectives

You use comparative adjective + than to compare two things.


Japan is smaller than the U.S.
Japan is more expensive than the U.S.

One-syllable adjectives
You add -er to one-syllable adjectives.
old ➝ older
small ➝ smaller
Spelling:
You double the consonant and add –er to one-syllable adjectives with a short vowel sound.
hot ➝ hotter
fat ➝ fatter
You add –r to one-syllable adjectives ending in –e.
late ➝ later
white ➝ whiter

Two-syllable adjectives + -y
You change -y to -i and add -er to two-syllable adjectives ending in -y.
happy ➝ happier
sunny ➝ sunnier

Long adjectives
You use more before three-syllable adjectives and most two-syllable adjectives.
expensive ➝ more expensive
interesting ➝ more interesting
careful ➝ more careful
modern ➝ more modern

Irregular adjectives
Some adjectives are irregular.
good ➝ better
bad ➝ worse
