Addition of Integers

Rule no. 1: If the addends have the same sign then add the numbers and copy their
sign.
Example: -8 + -5 = -13 8+17 = 25
Rule no. 2: If the addends have different signs then subtract the integers and copy the
sign of the higher absolute valued integer.
Example: 8 + -15 = -7 (negative, since 15 is higher than 8 and it is negative)
12 + -4 = 8 (positive, since 12 is higher than 4 and it is positive)

Add the following integers.

1) 15 + -28 = 19) 46 + -25 + 97 =

2) -16 + -45 = 20) -10 + -20 +30 =

3) -39 + -781 = 21) 12 + -47 + 74 =

4) 784 + 621 = 22) -45 + -16 + 31 + -28 =

5) 258 + -254 = 23) 16 + 24 + -28 =

6) -458 + 458 = 24) 32 + -13 + 14 + -9 =

7) 16 + 18 + -78 = 25) 18 + -17 + -14 + -10 =

8) -201 + 504 = Solve the following problem.

1) James used the elevator from
9) 45 + -87 + 98 = the first floor. He went 5 floors
up, then 2 floors down, and 10
10) 47 + -25 + -78 =
floors up again. Lastly, he went 6

11) 1000 + -603 = floors down. On what floor did he

stop using the elevator?
12) -77 + -702 + 502 =

13) -12 + -75 + 19 + 33 =

2) Bryan wants to test his agility.

14) 201 + -12 + -201 = From his starting point he runs

10 meters forward. Then he
15) -12 + -58 + -27 = comes back 8 meters. Then he
goes forward again by 15
16) 18 + 47 + 97 = meters. Finally he stopped after
going back 11 meters. How far is
17) -25 + 24 + 16 =
he from his starting point after he

18) -35 + -42 + -90 = stopped?
