Advent in Debrecen

From the start of Advent, the citizens of Debrecen celebrate together by lighting candles next to the
Christmas tree of the city year by year. This year, those who wish to join the common celebration are
welcome to watch square plays, listen to festive thoughts, participate at the candle-lighting ceremony
in the main square and listen to Advent concerts in the Reformed Great Church on three consecutive
Sundays.

The Christmas Market of Debrecen opens in Kossuth Square and Piac Street on 24 November,
welcoming visitors preparing for Christmas with unique craft products, irresistible delicacies and heart-
warming hot drinks in a lovable community space. In the streets smelling of fresh milk-loaf and spicy
mulled wine, all of us can prepare better for Christmas while looking around and tasting. One of the
main attractions of this year’s Christmas market is a hütte that arrived in Debrecen’s Kossuth Square
straight from Germany’s Black Forest. In the hütte visitors can taste the original Black Forest mulled
wine.

During the Christmas market, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the magnificent festive
lights of Debrecen from a nearly 45-m-high Ferris wheel set up in Kossuth Square from 23 November
to 6 January 2019. Next to the huge Christmas tree, a skating rink will rejoice children from 5
December to 6 January 2019.
