Monitor Closely
 phenobarbital + theophylline
phenobarbital will decrease the level or effect of theophylline by affecting hepatic
enzyme CYP1A2 metabolism. Use Caution/Monitor.
 phenobarbital + prednisone
phenobarbital will decrease the level or effect of prednisone by affecting
hepatic/intestinal enzyme CYP3A4 metabolism. Use Caution/Monitor.
 phenobarbital + theophylline
phenobarbital will decrease the level or effect of theophylline by affecting
hepatic/intestinal enzyme CYP3A4 metabolism. Use Caution/Monitor.
 prednisone + theophylline
prednisone will decrease the level or effect of theophylline by affecting
hepatic/intestinal enzyme CYP3A4 metabolism. Use Caution/Monitor.
 phenobarbital + prednisone
phenobarbital will decrease the level or effect of prednisone by P-glycoprotein
(MDR1) efflux transporter. Use Caution/Monitor.
 phenobarbital + ephedrine
phenobarbital increases and ephedrine decreases sedation. Effect of interaction is not
clear, use caution. Use Caution/Monitor.
Minor
 phenobarbital + ascorbic acid
phenobarbital decreases levels of ascorbic acid by increasing elimination.
Minor/Significance Unknown.

R2
Minor
 sodium bicarbonate + aspirin
sodium bicarbonate, aspirin. Mechanism: passive renal tubular reabsorption due to
increased pH. Minor/Significance Unknown. Salicylate levels increased at moderate
doses; salicylate levels decreased at large doses (d/t increased renal excretion of
unchanged salicylic acid).
