Alice Groy (1914-1994) also provided inspiration by streamlining the communication of origami ideas. All of the novice-levet works in this collection ore dedicated to Alice and her love of simple, elegant pieces Throughout the years as our presentation hes grown more polished, the goal of showcasing great origami has not diminished. The editors of the Origami Collection spend many hours curating, testing and editing origami designs to produce a book that will appeal to origemi aficionados of all levels and interests. Voriety is a key criterion: you will find works here by established origami artists as well as many hidden gems from up-and-coming stars. Most of the pieces are making their debut in these pages. We hope you are as excited about discovering these diagrams as we are in presenting them. This variation adds inside reverse folds to give the star points a slender and spikey appearance. Paper: You will need six 2:1 rectangles. If you cut three 3-inch (7.5 cm) squares in half, you will have six rectangles, each 1.5 x 3-inches (3.75 x 7.5 cm). You may use one, two, three or six different colors or patterns. Vary the position of the inside reverse folds for a snowflake or flower variation, Notes on Model Design: In201, Rachel Katz was helping the Origami Peace Tree Project with an origami exhibit. She needed some stars for an origami representation of the U.S. flag, Her own modular star made from 5 or 6 joined waterbomb bases (with the 4 “arms” on each waterbomb base folded up) had too much depth so she experimented by cutting the reat sections off and that is how she discovered the unit for this mode! which is basically the front haif only of her waterbemb base unit, Rachel's original REM Star diagrams can be found on her website: www.origamiwithrachelkatz.com, as weil as OrigamiUSA's 2012 Origami Collection. My variation with the narrowed points was inspired by a modular star from a different unit that was shown to me in 2002 by Phoenix, Arizona folder Cathy Wilimzig. MeLain's instructions gave general clues on how ta approach the work but for ‘purposes of simplicity it is much easier to attack the work in separate portions, Rather than trying to execute the entire model all in one large collapse. it is much easier to break the work up into its separate components and become familar vith the indivicual folding sequences first - then the entire work can be attempted on a singe sheet of paper: This is the copproach that has traditionally been used by people shering the work with each other and the one that we take here. Inthe original 12x32 crease map each portion and the various perts of each care are easily identified: 10 squares for cach of the boxears and associated couplers and 12 for the locomotive. Note that this means that the locomotive is folded from a proper 12x12 squore where the boxcars are folded from slightly smaller 10x12 rectangles. The map can be further broken down into the various portions which make up the cars: sides, couplers. front/rear. etc Wheel Wheel Wheel Whe Wheel Wheel “Cow-catcher 2 r . S ‘Whee Wheel Wheel ‘Whos Wheel Wheel rca xX ice x a ademas (obssae (rasmus) Rather than going through the process of creating a 32x12 pattern and lying in the associated crease patterns here we've provided colorized templates which the folder is encouraged to duplicate or download, cut out and then fold directly, Ackliionally. we breck down each rap inte several independent sequences which con be folded separately ‘and then addled together. This allows the folder to get famiiar with the sequences and get « better understanding of the overcll sequence before attempting the work on a single sheet. Later, when the folder works with ‘reof paper its recommended that a crease mop stil be used but in this case transferred directly on back of the sheet using sewing paper and tracing tools which are designed to mark cloth ‘which can be purchased inexpensively at any sewing store. Is important to note that the crease mops in these diagrams are all from the bottom of the model rather than the top. The diograms and associated templates utlize color to indicate valley (blue) cind mountain folds (red). Depending on where we are in the sequence, for purposes of clarity the crease lines may or may not be shown as dashed to indicate only the most important folds in each step. ‘his allows the folder to focus on the most important folds in each diagram for each step. We need to remove a fotal of aperoximately four blocks. This con be done in several ways: adjusting the longth of the boxcors. adjusting the length of the couplers. emoving oper from the rear closure or some comrbinotion of el three. Itis also possible to remove some poper from the tank of the locometive though this more complicated and may require the rearrangement ofthe locorotive's wheels, In the example below ‘we remove one square from each of the two couplers ond one from each boxcar. creating the following ternplate/crease map, i | 8/9 10/11/12) ey 5 itis possible to wet-fold though currency being designed to be resist to siaining will not easly absorb the methylcellulose used i wet-felding, Another chose is whether fo use 2 fresh or wom bil. Both are fine but wil gve different results, Fresh bills wil toke creates easly and give a very crisp result but the creases will be hard to reverse requiring some sort of tool when implementing wsheels, extending the eab, ete. A worn bil willbe less willing to take creases but will be more forgiving in performing colapses, ‘The adjusted template shove ie axciet cizalpraporton af a real dellar bill and the folder may duplicate it and adhere it directly to the back of the bill or use the tracing techniques described on the 2nd page of these diagrams, ‘The final challenge has to do with the media itself and how you get the crease mop onto the dollar.
