1 Scope
This standard is mandatory for all engineering work, both preliminary engineering
(Project Proposal or FEED) and detailed design, performed under reimbursable or time
unit rate contracts (under which the contractor’s warranty is only for rework); for work
carried out in-house; and for design changes proposed by Saudi Aramco as the scope of
Change Orders under lump sum contracts.
For detailed design performed under lump sum contracts (under which the contractor is
fully responsible for the performance of the facility), this standard shall be used as a
guideline and the contractor shall have the right to deviate from the ESPTs as it deems
necessary, provided the contractor satisfies the requirement under 2.3.
The Design Basis Scoping Paper (DBSP) for the development of project’s Piping &
Instrument Drawing(s) (P&ID) shall reference this entire standard during the Front-End
Engineering Design (FEED) or Project Proposal (PP)/Detail Design.
2.1 Any conflicts between this standard and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Engineering Standards (SAESs), Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), or
industry standards, codes, and forms shall be resolved in writing by the
Company or Buyer Representative through the Manager, Process & Control
Systems Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2.2 For preliminary and detailed designs performed under reimbursable or time unit
rate contracts or for work carried out in-house, request for deviations from this
standard shall be submitted in writing to the Company Representative, who shall
follow internal company procedure SAEP-302 and forward such requests to the
Manager, Process & Control Systems Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

2.3 For detailed design work performed under lump sum contracts, deviations from
this standard shall be reported in writing to the Company Representative, who
shall forward such information to the Manager, Process & Control Systems
Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

4 Design Philosophy
Each ESPT in this standard is designed to be used as a building block for developing a
project’s P&IDs. Upon the availability of project’s Process Flow Diagram(s) (PFD),
the P&IDs are generally developed during the FEED or the PP phases of the project.
This standard provides ESPTs only for major equipment for processing, separation, and
treating of the hydrocarbon process streams. Where appropriate, such as for heat
exchangers, the utility side stream(s) like cooling water, seawater, steam or steam
condensate are integrated into the ESPTs.
In these ESPTs, inlet stream flow measurement is provided only for gas compressors.
For all other equipment, outlet flow measurement is provided to enable assessment of
equipment’s performance, and appropriate operational control. Multi-phase streams are
not measured; flow measurement has been limited to single phase streams.
Except for the pumps, each ESPT is limited to a single piece of major equipment.
For example, when more than one piece of equipment is required in a process
configuration, such as two (2) fifty percent (50%) or four (4) twenty-five percent (25%)
capacity, appropriate ESPT may be used more than once as required. In such cases,
care must be taken by the engineering teams so as not to duplicate instrumentation that
can be combined into a single measurement, or having multiple bypasses around the
multitude of equipment.
Each pump ESPT is based on the provision of one (1) hundred-percent (100%) capacity
pump operating and one (1) hundred-percent (100%) capacity pump spare. For multiple
services, for example, if three (3) fifty percent (50%) capacity pumps are required, the
pump ESPT may be used twice provided one pump is deleted from the final P&ID,
because each pump ESPT has two pumps, and using twice will result in four pumps.
Care must be taken during design engineering to assure that each pump is protected for
minimum flow requirement and that there is no duplication of flow measurement or
level control of the operating pumps. If for a selected pump minimum flow protection
is not required or necessary, indicated piping and instrumentation for minimum flow in
the ESPT must be deleted.

Each ESPT is provided with specific notes that allow certain flexibility to facilitate
smooth design engineering by the engineering contractor without requiring unnecessary
waivers to this standard. Unless otherwise provided under the notes for a specific
ESPT, the indicated requirement for instrument(s) and the designated control
philosophy (as incorporated in each ESPT, reflect the best practices for engineering,
operational, loss prevention, and maintenance for minimizing life cycle costs for such
major process equipment) must be used without changes.
If a project’s Hazard and Risk Analysis (e.g., HAZOP) study dictates addition or
deletion of any valves, instruments, ZVs, etc., these items can be incorporated in
project’s P&IDs without securing P&CSD prior approval. However, such deviations
should be documented in the HAZOP study report.
For any hydrocarbon liquid streams that are rich in ethane, such as ethane-plus natural gas
liquids (C2+ NGL), which are subject to custody transfer measurements as defined by
SAES-Y-103, mass measurement of such liquid streams shall be implemented. The mass
transferred shall be determined by means of a metering system employing Coriolis
meters, or volumetric meters (turbine, ultrasonic, etc.) and density meters. A meter
prover and density meter (if required) shall also be provided for meter calibration.
