Introduction

Over the past few years CSR, as a concept, has been the focus of many deliberations and
research. It has grown in importance both academically as well as in the business sense. It
captures a spectrum of values and criteria for measuring a company’s contribution to social
development. As the term “CSR” is used continually, many complementary and overlapping
concepts, such as corporate citizenship, business ethics, stakeholder management and
sustainability, have emerged. These extensive ranges of synonymously used terms indicate
that multiple If perspectives and by those in facilitating roles such as the corporate sector,
government agencies, academics and the public sector. It describes CSR as “the concept that
an enterprise is accountable for its impact on all relevant stakeholders. It is the continuing
commitment by business to behave fairly and responsibly, and contribute to economic
development while improving the quality of life of the work force and their families as well
as of the local community and society at large…1” In other words, CSR refers to ensuring
the success of the business by inclusion of social and environmental considerations into a
company’s operations. It means satisfying your shareholders and customers’ demands while
also managing the expectation of other stakeholders such as employees, suppliers and the
community at large. It also means contributing positively to society and managing your
organization’s environmental impact. Hence, CSR is a contribution to sustainable
development, implying the way a company balances its economic, environmental and social
objectives while addressing stakeholder expectations and enhancing shareholder value. CSR
not only includes the activities that a company undertakes development, but also includes the
methods that a company, and transparency to various stakeholders among others. Realizing
the importance and the have incorporated socially responsible business practices. The basic
objective of CSR is to maximize the company’s overall impact on the society and
stakeholders while considering environment and overall sustainability. Some existing CSR
policy initiatives across countries as the importance of being socially responsible is being
recognized throughout the world, governments are aware of the Study Of Corporate Social
responsibility. The CSR in India has its individual ways and models. On one hand, the
government, being model employer for the public sector units (PSU). On the other hand in
the private sector too. Tata Group decoded the vision of the CSR into action with a great zeal
and promise in India way back in 1920 a Tata Iron and Steel Co. In pre and post-
Independence era of India, TATA’s have contributed largely in the overall development of
nation covering various spheres health education, environment, science and technology,
research, sports, culture etc. Among of many cheats and scandals taking place in India &
connection of many private sector companies, it is TATA Group who has always been
respected for its moral and generous values. The study of CSR drive of TATA’s would
augment the knowledge of the students and entrepreneurs with the noble input that is helping
to destitute masses of India.
LITERATURE REVIEW
1) In 1916, J. M. Clark, writing in the journal of Political Economy, wrote “If men are
responsible for the known results of their actions, business responsibilities must include the
known results of business dealings, whether these have been recognized by low or not.

2) One of the earliest recorded acts of Social Corporate Responsibility

comes from Cadbury, the Chocolate makers. George Cadbury, son of Cadbury founder John
Cadbury had this to say about responsibility of his company when it came to his employees "If
each man could have his own house, a large garden to cultivate and healthy surroundings -- then,
I thought, there will be for them a better opportunity of a happy family life."

3) In India, we saw Tata building Jamshedpur wherein rather than it being just homes for
employees, it features wide streets planted with shady trees, stadiums and parks, all cared for by
Tata Steel which has its oldest plant out there

4) In both cases, this was done going beyond the call of duty, but for long, this was informal and
not forced upon any companies to implement. While in the West, Social Responsibility has been
catching up, it’s been more about how companies trying to reduce their harmful impact on the
environment.

5) India has become the first country to enforce CSR though the Companies Act of 2013. Rather
than an act of selfless duty, this was made compulsory for companies with a net worth of Rs. 500
crores or greater or a turnover of Rs. 1000 crores or greater or those that have a net profit of Rs.
5 crores or greater.

6) The companies that fulfilled any of the above criteria were required to constitute a committee
from the Board of Directors comprising of 3 or more directors who shall look into various
aspects ranging from policies to be followed, activities that will be funded and finally monitor
them. The amount on CSR is now required to be about 2% of pre-tax profit.

7) Forced social spending doesn't really work in the way one anticipates. With companies more
concerned with growth of the company activities such as CSR constitute time expenditure many
cannot really afford.
 CSR in India :

the Companies Act 2013, along with Business Rules Corporate Social Responsibility Policy).

development of the United Nations Organization (UNIDO), it is generally understood that CSR
is the way in which the company achieves a balance of economic environmental and social
imperatives ("Triple Bottom-Line-Focus "), while at the same time meet the expectations of
shareholders And interested parties.
 Applicability :
The companies to which the provisions of the CSR apply are contained in the Underlying
Section 1 of Section 135 of the Companies Act of 2013. According to said section, the
companies have a net asset of INR 500 crore or more; or billing of INR 1000 crore or more; or
network. It is required that the gain of 5 crores of INR or more during any financial year

Committee" with effect as of April 1, 2014. The representation shown below provides the
