It has been more than eight years since ground…0… in the city's business district but the
stunning Shanghai Tower has finally thrown open its doors to the public, taking its place as
China’s tallest building, and the second tallest skyscraper in the world.
Soaring to 632-metres the tower …1… several miles away. It dwarfs its two nearest
neighbours, the 420-metre pagoda-like Jin Mao Tower and the 492-metre, 101-storey Shanghai
World Financial Centre, a building …2… as ‘the bottle-opener’. Up close, it is even more
impressive; its serpentine form spiralling skywards …3… glinting off its mirrored surfaced.
Designed by American architecture firm Gensler, at an estimated cost of £1.8 billion, the
building’s twisting shape …4… to echo that of a dragon emerging from the earth - although
you can soon find out by way of the Tower’s fantastic multi-media entrance hall that the
distinct form primarily works for a less romantic purpose - to "optimise wind loads".
The shiny …5… is an ultra-modern ‘daylighting glass skin’ used to reduce the need for
electricity. Natural green spaces and rain-catchers are…6… to cool the grounds, while 270
wind turbines have been built into the façade …7… the building. The Shanghai Tower, it turns
out, is not only a looker but …8… as well, considered to be one of …9… sustainable tall
buildings in the world.
And the superlatives keep on coming. Your ride to the 119th floor viewing platform comes by
way of the world’s fastest elevator, which rockets up and down the interior at an ear-popping
18 metres per second. The Shanghai Tower also boasts the world’s highest viewing platform
where visitors are greeted with.…10… . The tower had an estimated construction cost of
US$2.4 billion.
